Any factory workers from the third gen plants?

Our cars were built over 11 model years in two locations by a lot of people. This site has 110,000+ registered users. Anyone here ever in the factories? Any funny/cool stories? What was the opinion of the cars from the workers? Any secrets that can be revealed now? Anything interesting about the build process?
Just curious.....

Re: Any factory workers from the third gen plants?

An interesting topic. To add to this, we have a member here that has the last 1992 Camaro from the Van Nuys assembly plant and was able to tour the factory and watch his car being built.

His webpage:
http://www.last1992camaro.com

There's a gallery with pictures of behind the scenes of the assembly line while building the last 1992 Camaro.

Hmm I wonder what storm they're talking about in the second to last event. Sad fate for what could have been a valuable car.

Re: Any factory workers from the third gen plants?

Sweet. Found a Van Nuys assembly worker on facebook. Here's what he wrote:

Yes, I worked there. My father started in 55. I walked the uaw lines with him. I started in 76, If the car was built in Van Nuys I probably had my hands on at least some part of soft or hard trim. I also worked final line a while. I worked on the UAW/Employee magazine in the late eighties. As a team leader we tried to improve quality through what was known as the team concept. I ended my employement there in 1990. Many of my co-workers had gone to Saturn. Some of the union reps coevered the buutss and got National Union positions. After 1990 the local govt and Detroit stopped trying to save jobs. When the car was shipped to Canada, we knew the end was near!

I was one of the lucky few who got to drive a car home almost every night in the mid eighties. The RS cal spec. was an idea that was put forth by the teams @ Van NUys. I believe Framingham, had been shut down by this time and Camaros and Fbrds were only built by us. (Canada didn't count) The RS was a special edition with the v6 and a stick. We were going for sportiness and mileage for the envir0-wackos.

Great handling car, a little underpowered, of course get on the 5.7 and then what are were comparing against?

The lighting electronics on the Berlinetta were great, until you have to replace them twenty years later. Hard to find.

The T-Tops were always leaking. From installation to riding through the water test line, we were constantly trying to find a way to fix this engineering night mare. The Corvettes were good, we just copuld'nt get the consistency on the F body.
There are mso many stories b ut they are mainly people stories.

Wait... One time the engineers/designers were brought in from Detroit to understand how the car is put together. They came in with their pocket protectors (visualize 'The Nerds'), ties and white o\r light blue shirts.
All of them were assigned to a line member that correlated to their assigned design. The younger guys got right into it. Many cut their arms, fingers or whatever. They goit their clothes greasy and could not keep up with what they had designed. One old guy went and got a cup of coffee and hid from what he was supposed to do. 'I design the damn things, we pay you to figure it out and build it.' Hence the attitude, I feel, which helped to denigrate the quality of the GM products in the eighties.
After break, the engineers came back with overalls and shop rags.

Hope this helps.

Re: Any factory workers from the third gen plants?

wow now thats some interesting info there. I always wondered how our cars were truely built. Atleast he was honest said the ttops were a issue lol, no brainer there. Ive always wanted to know or ask someone if they worked at the plant, or in the ohio plant. Asking how it was building the car that grabbed my attention over any car i wanted growing up.

Dang that is sad about the last firebird. It doesnt matter to me really if somebody has something special or valueable, people to me should treat there cars as valueables, because they might wonder one day an enthusiast is offering so much for your car when you might not have a clue know that wont happen, but still sucks the last firebird has to roll off as only a v6. I know my car is nuthing special or rare for a 91 TA but how many do you really see in great shape these days? Especially when in 91 and 92 they really didnt build as many TA in the last third gens of the 90s, compared to how many they built in the 80s.

Re: Any factory workers from the third gen plants?

I posted up on Yahoo Answers asking for people to come forward and give some history on what building Thirdgens was like in the Van Nuys plant. No answers yet

I work on an assembly line, I build gas nozzles like the ones you see at gas stations (this is so I can pay for college as I go). I have a pretty good idea of how a factory works and the atmosphere... it's long, mindless work but I wish I was around to build those Camaro's and Firebirds. Sometimes I have to swtich from 3/4" nozzles to the 1" "bad boys" lol. That's what my co-workers call them. I can only imagine how awesome it would have been to assemble some 350tpi Iroc-z's

Re: Any factory workers from the third gen plants?

my late great uncle retired from GM about 15 years ago and his sole job he said was mainly to place the rocker trim inside the floors on the f-bodies and when he wasnt doing that he was making them so i would just about say that my late great uncle had his hands on my 89 rs.....wich is kinda sad because the family still misses him, but its nice to think that i still have something from him even though i didnt have it then i have it now...

Re: Any factory workers from the third gen plants?

i worked with a guy who died a few years back. he had worked at GM Norwood here in ohio. I got to hear alot of great stories, but he was far from a car guy. He worked there from the early 70's till about 83.

Re: Any factory workers from the third gen plants?

I always enjoy threads about the manufacturing history of our cars. Both my 72 Nova and my 88 Firebird were built at the Van Nuys plant, I wonder if there is a someone who had worked on both of them 16 years apart lol (technically 15, Firebird is a early 88 model built September 87). The original owner of my Formula was(is) a GM Power Train Engineer, Probably why my car has a L98.
