confusing pt# issues with pwr/antenna (repeat)...
This is a repeat post that i posted from the audio section and seeing if i find any help for this situation....if this thread is removed i understand i understand....
"okay i've already did a search here and i'm pretty confused from what's going on...
I own a 89 gta and i have decided to repair my power antenna mast since it was broken off a few years ago. (I disconnect the relay to prevent from the motor from continuously running and draining the battery.)
Here's my issue...
after reading several threads about what is the correct part number to get as the replacement, (aka pt# 22038195) I've discovered that this part number only works on vehicles for 82-88 models. However a couple of people mention that this part has also worked on a someone's '89 TTA and a 92 GTA...
The oem gm part number for 89-91 is 22072184 and i haven't been able to find the superseded number for this, nor can i find the part anywhere or even at my local dealership. They say the number is valid but that part has been discontinued. Under the search results i haven't been even able to find this part number as well)
i wish not to purchase the whole assembly (if it's even avaliable)
and the original part number for that complete unit is 22093964....
anywho if there's any help to clarify this i would extremely appreciate it...
I'm willing to spend the money that is needed to get the situation fixed as this is part of my restoration process...."

What is the difference in the antenna from 82-88 and 89+? I just recently replaced my antenna inards because of the same reason. I found the part number here on TGO, called my dealer and got an updated number. They quoted me a price of 2x what a local AC Delco shop can get it for. I think I paid $18 for it from the local shop. The antenna part for my 87 is still available so I would think that yours would be also if it is different. Sorry I can't be more help. Here is the part number I used, 19151297.

On my national locator, 22072184 got 2 hits. The 19151297 is available at many dealerships all over the country. PM me your e-mail if you want the contact info.

Keep in mind also if you get the whole antenna chances are pretty
good that its going to be the universal antenna.
The first I got about 10 years ago was Identical GM antenna.
The next three,(Not for my car), were universal from GM Direct showing
original part#.
You just have to rotate the housing to clear body and fab up a
simple bracket.

As for the difference...from 82-88 based on my parts and illustration catalog they had two different designs on the antenna tube but i'm not sure if that would affect the antenna mast and cable. Other then the actual part numbers, i can't really clarify what's the difference without taking mine apart and comparing another mast from a earlier year....
Thanks for the help for those who posted...nobody seemed to respond to this same post in the audio section!....
oh yeah Daveb123, you got a PM...thanks

Re: confusing pt# issues with pwr/antenna (repeat)...
A friend of mine just replaced his antenna with a universal fit GM unit... it looks like crap IMHO, completely different than the original. I would take Scott's advise and try to fix the mast, unless you do not care.
Typically at the bottom of the mast in the motor, there is a large gear that is run by a motor that turns a vinyl cable. The cable almost always is the problem when the antenna breaks, unfortunately I do not think you can replace just the vinyl cable, you have to replace the entire mast portion with the vinyl cable...
There is a special wrench that you can buy at some automotive paint stores that has the 4 prongs to remove the antenna bolt from the car. Be careful when removing it as I had one corrode up on me and the antenna gouged up the paint I got over it, I just repainted the car
I wonder if the difference in the part numbers is one was originally black, and the newer ones were chrome as the replacements are chrome. Might be something to ask.

When you replace the cable, you also replace the top of the antenna mast. It does take some time to do it correctly, but it isn't that big a deal. The picture below is what you get when you order that part number. The other sections of the mast need to be in good condition and also the screw at the top needs to be in place. You will need these to finish the replacement.

As for the GM replacement universal being a piece of crap, didn't
see any difference in them other than having to rotate housing
slightly and fab up a simple bracket. Works great.
Just offering an alternative in case you go that way.
Also came with about five top besels to select including one with
a little wider base, think is if you pull a little paint and covers it.
Also came with a chrome top bezel which I used instead of black
on mine.

Re: confusing pt# issues with pwr/antenna (repeat)...
again thanks for the advise guys and alternatives...
I'm gonna be searching for the oe replacement...
scottmoyer, unfortunately that part wont work for my car as my whole antenna mast was broken off from a stupid cardboard box flying on the highway and happen to strike my vehicle (of all vehicles on the road, it had to hit mine). When i arrived at work the actual chrome mast was broke in half, the top half just dangling with the cable attached and the rest inside the fender with the motor...so i need a whole mast and cable assembly and not just partial...
will keep ya'll posted on this...

Re: confusing pt# issues with pwr/antenna (repeat)...
The pieces supplied for the top where the antenna mounts to the fender did not fit. I would have had to try to modify them (and my fender) to get them to fit right. Also, no matter how I rotated the motor it did not fit between the fender and the body of the car. I ended up returning it for a repair kit, though it was the entire mast, housing, and cable assembly not the pieces pictured in Scott's post above. Mine is an 86, so I dont know if that kit above would have fit or not. Sorry, do not have the part number I ordered handy or I'd post it up... but I got it off a post from this board. from 6 or so years ago.

If anybody is looking for the antenna repair kit that costs between $15 and $25 everywhere, you could get ripped off by using the Buy It Now on this auction for $79.99.

I would stay away from this seller just because of this!!!

Try locating an AC Delco parts shop in your area. If there isn't one, NAPA may have access to the part or you can try gmpartsdirect.com.
I just did a google search for "GM Part Number 19151297" and came up with a few.

Ok I ordered the wrong part thats why I got that message. I ordered 22038195 (which was discontinued) So I just ordered 19151297. I hope they have one cause the AC Delco supplier here said that 19151297 was discontinued and no long available.

Well I ordered one from Gmpartsdirect.com, but just to see if I could have got a better price I called Scott at the # you posted and he said the same thing my local guy here said they are no longer available. So hopefully Gmpartdirect.com has one more for me. Looks like another part to our cars is gone...
