Any 4 cyl iron dukers?

Hey guys, I have not yet noticed a single iron duke 4 cyl thirdgen on this website so far. I was always wondering what they look like under the hood. Does anybody have an iron duke car here? pics would be neat.

re: Any 4 cyl iron dukers?

that's a clean car! it must be slow as heck but it's very nice. My friend's dad has a plain-jane 82 Firebird as well but with the V6... he said he almost bought the L4 back in the day (he bought it brand new and still has it to this day with 36,000 miles)

re: Any 4 cyl iron dukers?

They look just like the S-10's iron duke. Only difference is I could live with a 2.5 in a small truck, but never in a car lol.

Very slow cars, very slow in the s10s to, my dad had an 86 2.5, it was reliable truck, just so freakin slow. Did not like the motor output, but it was easy, cheap to work on. Guy next to my work was selling his 4cylinder camaro a week or so ago on craigslist, has the 4cylinder with 4 speed in it, which ive never seen before. http://pensacola.craigslist.org/cto/1443491602.html

gotta love those wheel covers on a camaro!
And I saw a 4 cyl camaro in Rhode Island on craigslist a while back. it was an 83 though if i'm not wrong. That's the only one I found on my own. Do people ever put any work into those? Like turbos... etc.

re: Any 4 cyl iron dukers?

This is my Dad's 82 Iron Duke. He used to be able to do super long one wheel peel's in it haha. He claims it ran pretty good for a 4cyl. He owned a 76 Firebird with a 350 before that.

No pictures of the motor or anything...so you'll have to take my word for it. Its long gone unfortunatly I wish he still had that. Or the 76...

re: Any 4 cyl iron dukers?

The L4 cars are actually noted in a book... unfortunately the name of the book is "Cars we love to hate"

The 4 cyl F-body, made from 1982 - 1985 ranks up there with other "Fake Muscle cars", it is grouped with the 74-78 Mustang II, 4.9L 80-81 Turbo Trans Am, 77-81 Z28, 76-80 Dodge Aspen R/T & Plymouth Volare Road runner, 1980 "California" Corvette 305, 83-88 Hurst Olds/442, 1974 GTO, Delorian, Bricklin SV1, Renault Alliance GTA, Renault Fuego Turbo, Chevy Cosworth Vega & some other "dishonorable mentions."

You can actually read the book on Amazon

re: Any 4 cyl iron dukers?

Unless somebody made their own turbos, other than that aftermarket companies are were not the least bit interested in making any kind of performance for the iron dukes, they were short lived 80s motors, and were not worth modding, they were just gas saver motors. They werent anything else but that back in the day. GM never intended of making the motors tricked out or anything, when my dad had his iron duke rebuilt at 200K the heads, and everything were just junk. I think people just wanted to buy a good looking body car, with good fuel economy. The fieros i heard some ppl doing some weird tricked out stuff to the motors, but a 1 injector tbi 4 cylinder isnt putting down power lol.

Pontiac along with many aftermarket companies had the Iron Duke Super Duty program going strong in the 80's.

All of these components were available to the public.

This program produced the actual 1984 Indy Fiero Pace Cars.

Re: Any 4 cyl iron dukers?

I drive one every day since I purchased it on this forum a couple of years ago out of South Bends, IN. 1984 firebirds.
I love it, good on gas and runs very strong for what it is.

Re: Any 4 cyl iron dukers?

I do know that there was an article that was put out by Hot Rod, but the mag was called "Pontiac Performance Plus" circa about 1985 that gives details on how to make an SD 4 cyl for a fiero... it gives specs, & a bunch of information, drawings how to make it. It was for a Feiro, but I would think that the techniques and the information would be similar for Longitudinal car and a transverse engine that they used in the Fiero...

So GM did have some things out there, but not much.

You mean these? I have a photo of the motor but it failed to upload twice, so I'll let it go for now.

Haha, we got the V8 TBI's which are basically the same... 2 injectors for 8 cylinders. Just take a couple of iron dukes and tape em together lmao. and that super duke is incredible.
Anybody got a video of an iron duke f-body running? I always wondered what they sound like lol

Whoops! Forgot that there were distinct versions of the Pace cars for the 500 and the PPG Series. Anyhow....heres the motor in that PPG (thanks for correcting me) Fiero Pace Car.

Re: Any 4 cyl iron dukers?

Old thread I know, but my first car was a 4cyc 1984 camaro 4 speed manual and I think it's top speed was 70-75 mph It sure brings back a lot of memories. I would collect that If I ever come across one again.

Yes, old thread...... I know. Does anyone realize that an Iron Duke is a 302 SB Chevy split down the middle? 4" bore, 3" stroke.

I believe that it is actually half of a Pontiac V8.

You are right - Pontiac 301 - 4" bore, 3" stroke. But it did have a Chevrolet bell housing.

Re: Any 4 cyl iron dukers?

Love them! Had one i an 86 Buick Somerset and it was bulletproof. And believe me when I tell you that me at 16 put it through hell constantly. No timing chain to worry about on those motors but the geardrive gives them that distinctive sound. It amazed me that the engine got put in anfbody. 90hp is really low for that load. I'd drive one now. Also had one in a fiero. It performed nicely in that car. Four speed helped too. My automatic fiero also ran well with it.

That little engine took a BEATING and still kept going. I've found my VIN to one of my old cars and gonna try to track down it's fate. (I never see 2.5 manual camaro's) its been years.
