Stupid Cash for Clunkers!

I knew it was bound to happen- The Toyota dealer next door took in a 3rd gen on cash for clunkers! Not just any 3rd gen either, it's an '89 IROC,
L98 G92 car- In pretty good shape too! What a shame!

Re: Stupid Cash for Clunkers!

They can't sell the car- Once the VIN goes into the C4C system- the car has to go to a junkyard that is required to destroy the engine & transmisson.

Are there any rules on what qualifies?

I mean, if the emissions are clean & the car is solid, s far as driiveability goes....It's not REALLY a clunker, right?

its just a government scam to try and get people to buy new cars, boost the economy ect.

As for getting the car, it probably wont happen unless you can pull some strings at the junkyard before they wreck it. If not, carve it up for parts

Yeah, that's what is so ironic & stupid about this program- the cars have to be licensed, insured and inspected for one year, meaning they have passed the emissions test within the last year- The car I started this thread about had a shiny new cat in it's exhaust! We are junking clean cars!

Don't be so surprised, I'm just glad that it only goes back (I think) 20 years, so 60s-70s classics are safe. I work at a dealer, and while we haven't gotten anything like that, we have had a nice mid-late 90s Cherokee that would be an awesome off roader, if not a dd. There is a few explorers, a towncar (less than 10yrs old) a conversion van and a Durango. Granted, most of what we have had in I will not shed a tear over, I'm surprised about the Towncar and upset about the Jeep.

I believe that the oil needs to be drained, then some sort of epoxy and/or silica mixture (sand) poured into the motor and they let it run til it seizes.

What you might be able to do is intercept the car at the junk yard, after they receive it, but before they start cutting into it, then you can do a sweet LS1 swap!!!! This way you can save a good body, and the gov can have their pound of meat.

Re: Stupid Cash for Clunkers!

Well early third gens are safe. 84s are 25 so they don't count in the list of cash for clunkers. As for the rest, if they have a mpg of 18 or better on the combined then they are safe as well. There was an article on the program and they said Hummers can't be crushed....hmmm something is wrong with this picture.

Re: Stupid Cash for Clunkers!

Theres no saving the car unfortunetly... I work at GM dealership as a mechanic and our G.M told us that any clunker we get in we have to drain the oil, add an acid additve and run the motor till it seizes. then push it outside to the back lot to be towed away... Then its up the junkyard/scrap yard what happens to it.

Re: Stupid Cash for Clunkers!

I'm not much concerned about the program. The "good" 3gens will be worth more than the voucher value, and will just be sold by the owner to another person in the open market instead. The rusted-out, dented up old "junky" 3gens that owners want to put into the program most likely wouldn't be much of a good source of parts anyway, if a yard had tried to part one out. If anything, this program might increase the value of the well-kept and/or pretty much clean 3gens still out there.

What is a classic car.
Just like garage sales, one persons junk is another persons treasure.

Ford guys have no use for GMs so GMs are junk to them.
Many people only drive cars, and an old car is just that an old car.

And many times I and others have said, our BS CA rules will go nationwide and here's your sign. "I SHOULD HAVE WRITTEN MY CONGRESSMAN".

Not that I want to dispute you, but the car I started this thread about is a L98 IROC G92 car. According to the Camaro white book. it is one of 1426-a pretty rare car I would not consider "junky"

Re: Stupid Cash for Clunkers!

Want to know what's even worse. OUR tax dollars were used to buy that car. We paid $3000 to $4000 for that car and sold it to a junkyard for what...maybe around $100??? Our country is broke and having to borrow money and now the government thinks it's a good idea to buy thousands of cars and sell them at a $3000 to $4000 LOSS!!! Brilliant!!!

Ideas like this mean only one thing...buckle up because it's going to get a LOT worse!!!

Re: Stupid Cash for Clunkers!

That's sad to just scrap a running G92 Iroc. That's enough to make any F-body person ill. A co-worker of mine is trading a nice clean original 91 F150 Supercab 4x4, 351with a manual trans truck for the cash for clunkers program and getting $4500.00 towards a new Toyota truck. Before you laugh, if it can happen to a Ford, it can also happen to a Chevy or a GMC. It's already happened to the one IROC, and there will certainly be more thirdgens and maybe some fourthgens lost also. The point is that we are going to loose a lot of potental classics, and future parts to keep other classics running before this program expires. I hope his new Toyota is a Lemon!

Re: Stupid Cash for Clunkers!

AHHHHHH, they think they're really gettin somewere with this when most of the people trading there cars in are trading AMERICAN cars in and buying imports, i hope this turns around and bites the government in the A$$. But the deal is the car you buy has to get 10mpg or better then the one your trading in for it to qualify for C4C and the dealership HAS to crush the motor and transmission but the junkyards are allowed to keep the rest of the car for parts.

Re: Stupid Cash for Clunkers!

It should be used for American cars only!! Its our American tax dollars used in this government program. The whole program sucks. It will eventually cause used parts from the bone yard to become hard to find and expensive. Maybe someone will buy a mitsubishi or toyota.

YEAH! No C4C deals if your buying a Toyota, Honda, Kia, or any other asian POS.
I know the guys at junkyards by my house. If they got a decent running Iroc in they'd find a way save it and sell it, no point in scrapping a perfectly good sports car.

Can't believe someone traded that in on the program.84's the cut off thank god.The program is targeted at stuff like SUVs and such, but I'm sure a few Camaros,Grand Nationals, and Mustangs will get crushed allong the way.

We thank you guys for buying resto parts and keeping these cars on the road.

All I can say is wow to the government, and to that person. All C4C is doing is getting stupid people that have american cars to sell them and to buy new imports. How does that help the economy??

Re: Stupid Cash for Clunkers!

LB9Iroc87 read the C4C rules,

As one commentator put it, C4C is just a welfare program for new car makers.

And yes we are paying for it.

They could not make it buy american only with all the foreign car assembly plants in the USA. Even mentioning it in some context Canada got really pi$$ed off.

Crushing these cars will make late 3rd gen and 4th gen parts few and far between, actually all vehicles 85 and newer.

Someone F'd up, that car does NOT qualify under the rules. It has to be EPA rated at 18 MPG combined (average city/hwy) to qualify. The EPA Rating on that car is 16city/24Hwy Divided by 2 = 20 combined.

Again, that car does NOT qualify. If you really want to save that car, call the EPA and raise holy hell that the dealerships are accepting cars that do not qualify. This is not debatable, these laws are based specifically on EPA mileage. None of the TPI 5.0 cars qualify either, they get slightly better mileage.

Maybe the car could be bought from the junkyard as "junk", and then retitled with a salvage title?

Next time you see that IROC, it'll be a damn Corolla. It pisses me off when a seemingly decent car gets wasted. And that Camaro looks better then mine.

Why not? The Dodge Daytona was a IROC. Domestic but still.....

All of them qualify. Even some of the V6 cars qualify. These laws are based specifically on the REVISED EPA mileage, listed at www.fueleconomy.gov

Note it says 15city/23highway

The "combined" rating is 55% city/45% highway, not (a+b)/2, so using the new 15/23 and 55%/45%.... you get... 18 combined.

Re: Stupid Cash for Clunkers!

This is not gonna fly. There are WAY to many car people out there that will let theirs go. He11 if I'll ever let them take any car of mine away.

Our country is doomed

And if the car is being junked, Why does it have to be in running order to trade in? lol

My 92 RS is probably worth a little under 4k, so I could make more doing the "cash for clunkers" deal, but it would be a shameful thing to do if you ask me!

And this is why I love my v6. Take that v6 haters! lol jk

Engine Size 2.8 L Cylinders 6 Transmission Automatic 4-spd Drive Rear-Wheel Drive Options (FFS) Vehicle Category Passenger Car Combined MPG 20

Qualifies for CARS?

No. Your trade-in must have a Combined MPG rating of 18 MPG or less to qualify.

Oh my GOD... I kid you not... I shuddered and felt nauseous when I read your second paragraph. It's like a **** concentration camp... for cars!

But I couldn't have felt more pissed off when I read about that black IROC that got scrapped.. 2010... here we come.

What?! That guy couldn't have possibly been stupid enough to junk that thing for 4 grand. There must've been something wrong with it. Maybe the engine/tranny were on their way out or the bottom of the unibody was rusting out?

Re: Stupid Cash for Clunkers!

I regretfully will have to conseed that both of my cars wouldn't qualify for "clunkers" then since they get better than 16 mpg. Stock 305's are rated higher than this. I forgot what the mpg specs are exactly. Anybody know what the l98 iroc mpg is?

Re: Stupid Cash for Clunkers!

Sorry, but every 305 in the years in question qualifies by the mileage rating. I dont know how people dont get that. Go to www.fueleconomy.gov, look up your car. The "revised" combined EPA rating listed there is what they go by. Every V8 thirdgen from 1984 to 1992 has 18 or less combined MPG, making every one of them qualify. Seems like all the V6 M5 cars do as well.

Yea, we have had about 8 or 9 cars in so far. I think 4 or 5 Exploders, a windstar, Continental, E350 conversion van, durango, VERY new looking Volvo wagon, at most 4 yrs old, a couple jeeps.

We dont have the "kill a car" stuff in yet (should have it tommorw), so the used car tech pulled in each one, drained the oil, and pulled them back out to the far end of the lot. Surprisingly all of them had no problem with that, some even registered oil pressure still, only tried to kill 2 cars, the Lincoln and a 4.0 exploder. the continental no longer runs, the exploder didn't, but makes bad noises.

I'd say 3 of these car were kinda crappy, but none were clapped out jalapies. I think we're going to be pulling some spare parts from these things (fuses etc, like to get the fuel out, but nowhere to store it. 1 had a full tank!!).

Oh, FYI, only the engines are being scrapped, and they are only getting siezed, so all the rest of the car, including external engine parts should be available from the junk yead. Down side is, once the VIN gets put into the C4C database, it can never be registered again. so my LS1 swap idea will only work if you don't plan on registering it. That might make it hard to put a plate on it, cops tend to pick up on these things.

Re: Stupid Cash for Clunkers!

Gotta be a way around it. Take the vin off a real clunker and put it on the nice one. Man, I should run a chop shop..
