Cant recall seeing premium on the cluster. Later models, 92+ perhaps or on the inside of the filler cover with a sticker maybe?

Re: Premium Unleaded Gas Gauge

The Canadian cars didn't even say "unleaded fuel only." They simply said "fuel." We got circles instead of E and F as well.

Can't help you on the premium question though.

Re: Premium Unleaded Gas Gauge

AFAIK, The TPI cars recommended (but did not require) Pemium... Actually if you do not hammer on the car to where you get spark knock, I have found that you actually get better milage from Regular, apparently there is more energy.

Re: Premium Unleaded Gas Gauge

The 87 L98 gauge only says Unleaded Fuel Only on it. Premium fuel requires a higher temperature to burn all the fuel. Todays Premium vs. yesterdays Premium may be different and the computer needs to be calibrated accordingly. If the fuel isn't burning the most efficient, then it becomes waste out the tail pipe. Sounds like the Regular is burning more efficiently so you are getting better mileage.

Re: Premium Unleaded Gas Gauge

The premium in 1987 was 91 Octane, today it is very common to see 93 octane, and i@ Sunoco I have seen 94 Octane... At least here in MI...

Re: Premium Unleaded Gas Gauge

well i messed up last tank and filled up with midgrade.
got a nasty reminder when i floored it to merge onto the highway
(i love flooring this car so much, i dont need to, but hey, its a camaro lol)

that was a bit of a scare, it started knocking and pinging so bad...
needless to say, i use premium.

Re: Premium Unleaded Gas Gauge

That is just the thing, The higher the octane the slower it burns and the cooler it burns. So you can advance the timing to get better power. The down side is the fuel is not as efficient so you get worse fuel economy. In short, if you want performance, get premium, if you want economy get Regular. I would never get anything less than 87 Octane hoever I remember some gas stations had an economy 86... At the time I owned a 1977 Buick Electra LTD that with 86 Octane would spark knock at 55 Mph going up a hill on the expressway... If I traveled at 65 it would almost constantly spark knock...

Never noticed that before. I have it on my 87. But none of the others I've seen do.
