from what i heard and i think i saw it in some form of literature... if you get the full slp upgrade you can actually unleash i believe up to 270hp...on 91-92 models that have the 350 engine...go downward if you have the 305, etc...
(but don't take my word for it) Hope someone out there may help out on this..cause i wanna know as well...

Go buy that man, what $6 500 cnd is $5 500 usd? That's a sick buy. Fairly low kms too. I thought it was around 270ish too.

SLP claimed an additional 50 HP by the time you did everything, the Headers, runners, Chip, cold air intake etc...
I posted the pic so the information does not go away when the ad does.

Re: found a SLP dealer equiped GTA
well i decided to go on ebay and purchase this 6 page article that came out of a 1991 hot rod magazine. It had some detail performance info about the formula, convertible gta, stock gta trans am, and a slp gta trans am....the test results i found are pretty interesting...
the stock GTA trans am hardtop with the 5.7L engine, without the slp package is rated at 240hp @4400rpms with 340lbs of torque @ 3200rpms
The SLP GTA trans am (of course no ttops and with all the goodies) is rated at 290hp @ 5500rpms with 360+ (?) lbs of torque @ 3200rpms
now i wonder did the slp camshaft for the L98 block came out after the 3rd gens ceased after 92 production? ... If so, i wonder how much more torque and hp numbers would of been provided even though the cam wasn't offered in the SLP package in the first place..
also i found out is that the 91 years had 3.23 gears for the autos and 3.42 with the manuals....
why did gm decide 3.23? that's a step "higher" from the 3.27 even though i don't care much for the australian borg warner unit...you would think they tried to go a lil lower in ratio...eh oh well a mystery it will be...

Re: found a SLP dealer equiped GTA
why so shocked about 3.23 VS 3.27?
Going higher numericaly would hurt mileage and lower hurt performance. Easiest thing was to keep them the same (which they virtually are)

The difference between a 3.23 & 3.27 is circumstantial. If you look a the cars closely you will find that there was a decrease in costs through the years for the cars. GM did everything possible to lower the production costs of the 3rd Gen. For example, they dropped the black painted area in front of the windshield in 1989, they also stopped painting the lower air dam pieces on the Base Firebird & Formula in 1989, they all were black. The Speed Density TPI engine was less expensive to make, as they were able to drop the 9th injector, and the MAF, not to mention the engine was more similar to the V6. the MAP sensor ultimately is much cheaper to produce. The Saginaw Axel was made by GM, not outsourced, they could make it for less. GM dropped the special molded door panels after 1989. These are all little ways to lower the cost of the car.
In 1990 I believe it was mandated that they had to incorporate a better Dash for Crash worthiness, they also opted to include an Airbag to lower Insurance costs, there were a bunch of improvements made, so they needed to offset the costs and the weight with something else that was less important. I do not think it was any mistake, nor by chance that there were no 1990 cars made in 1990.
Ultimately these things did not decrease the quality of the car, it was simply a means to lower the bottom line. And could be played off as being a cosmetic or style change.
