Third gen prototypes and designs.
Hi,
Does anyone have pictures of the prototypes of the Third Gen F-Body ? There is a little information on 82firebird.com, but no photos.
Thanks

There are many pics of 3rd gen prototypes and pre-
production cars in Michael Lamm's book"camaro, the
third generation" isbn 0-89586-460-6 (1987).
Several prototypes were built using 1978 "G" body
suspensions and parts grafted onto chevy monzas
to test suspension and drivetrain components.
design was approved for production 12-12-78,steel
bodied running prototypes were finished in march
1980,in dec.1980, two camaro and two firebird
3rd gen pre-production cars made it onto public
roads for a corporate"ride+drive" near phoenix AZ.

Re: Third gen prototypes and designs.
there is a thread on earlythirdgen.com/forums that has a bunch of prototypes. Also if I remember correctly Fabulous Firebirds also has photos of prototypes in it despite being a book dedicated to the first and second gen cars.
Here is the link to the thread over at early third gen that has some photos.

Re: Third gen prototypes and designs.
I want to think that the book third generation Firebirds has a little IIRC. http://www.amazon.com/Pontiacs-Third...6041216&sr=1-1
Honestly if you look at both books you get a real complete picture of the development of both cars. Honestly you can see where they took ideas that were originally designed for Firebirds and ended up on Camaros, and vise-verse.

Re: Third gen prototypes and designs.
Looking in a 1983 "super chevy" magazine,noticed 2
interesting prototypes of z28s: one looked like a
pre-production L69 as it had the L69 dual intake air
cleaner,'82 style A/C lines(they go over the engine,'83
-later go over the radiator)also had belt drive fan
instead of production L69 electric. The 2nd z28 had a
4.3l v6 with port injection and a turbo. Engine had '84
vette style serpentine belt system, turbo(looked like an
IHI) was mounted in the space between the radiator and
the engine -wrong cylinder count for a proper z28 but
no doubt lots of power.Turbo v6 version had"export"
clear plastic headlight covers.
