Matching # Engines

Where do I look to see if my engine is the matching # engine for my car. Will the # have some part of the vin. I know mine is the original engine in my car but I would just like to know that it is.

I was wondering the same thing. I still have the original block which I kept and took photos of the stampings I found on it when I pulled my L69 because it was blown. I just looked over the photos and while they are fuzzy I don't see anything that shows numbers matching except for something that says 5.0LG on the back I am guessing the G matches my engine VIN code. My heads were so trashed that I scrapped them but I kept the block for the numbers matching reason and I am hoping to have it rebuilt from the block I have for that reason. I've gotta get it out of the weather if i want to do that. At least my brother painted it so it may not be a lost cause.

Re: Matching # Engines

The castings should all have the last 6 of your VIN stamped on them.

Re: Matching # Engines

I wouldnt think that it would be the # on the rear of the block since that is casted into the block itself, but what about the #'s stamped on the head surface of the block(I think its on the pass. side head surface in the front next to the timing cover). I always remember a stamped # sequence being there on other engines I've rebuilt.

Hmm... now that I think about it maybe there is something there. I will need to take a look at it over spring break. The heads are long gone but if I rebuild it to L69 specs from the block I should be in good shape for a numbers matching car if I can get that engine rebuilt. Worse comes to worse I will just put in a rebuilt L69 from another car and it will be correct because mine is a L69/T-5 combo from the factory. I have the PHS documents to prove it. (at least what they gave me)

Re: Matching # Engines

jermdm has it right...

The stamping is under (behind) the alternator (1982-1987) or behind the Ac compressor (1988 - 1992).

Here is an example of a long gone 1987 Trans Am or GTA

The small numbers are what you are looking for 2HN211943

2 = Pontiac
H = Model Year (like VIN)
N = Norwood, L = Van Nuys (like VIN)
2 = Pontiac
11943 = Sequence number

I went back through the photos I have of it and while it is really fuzzy; I have a photo like this. I was looking at the larger numbers and didn't notice the smaller ones due to the crappy nature of the photo. I can barely make out my sequence number and it matches. Maybe I should get the motor out of the back yard when I get home.......or should I say the block and whats left.....
