Powdercoat original IROC mags?
Anyone powder coat the original rims? Looking into getting mine done...clear coat is cracked/hazy and I don't want the gold on there. I redid the stock aluminum mags on my Monte SS and that was a PITA. I would rather just pay the 200-300. Imput? Pics?

Re: Powdercoat original IROC mags?
I bought a used set of gold IROC wheels for my sons Camaro awhile back. I had them media blasted to get rid of the clear coat and gold paint. Then I polished them and painted between the spokes with a nice metallic grey, they looked great. I wanted to keep them looking nice so I took them to my local powder coating shop to have a clear powder coated added for protection. He informed that the heat used in the powder coating would screw-up the painted areas (makes sense), I ended up having a coat clear coat paint applied instead.
If you want to clear coat wheels I would suggest blasting the wheels and then polishing the correct areas, then have a clear powder coat applied to the wheels. I didn’t get a quote but I did get the impression from the powder coating shop that this wouldn’t be cheap either.
Not sure how much this helps but, this was my experience.

was just going to have the whole wheel done one color. media blasted and powdercoated...one place wants 55 a rim and another 75 a rim...i didn't think that that was too bad, but i did pay 200+ a rim on my monte(changed to torq thrust II's)....I just like the look of the stock rims on the camaro

Re: Powdercoat original IROC mags?
Yeah, I love the IROC rims too, I hope to be able to afford some 17” or 18” “knock-offs” sometime in the future for my IROC.
When I was talking to the local powder-coater I got the impression that he wanted $80 to $100 per wheel. I live in a small town that only has one supplier so I think he thought he could charge whatever he wanted. After I already spend about $800 for the wheels and tires, this was more jack than I wanted to put out (remember, these were for my sons car, not mine). In a case like yours I probably wouldn’t be opposed to forking out $250 bucks to have a set coated, they should last forever.
I like the idea of media blasting the wheels before getting them coated. Be sure to polish the appropriate parts on the wheel before you get things coater. I have a friend that blasted some IPOC rims, painted them and then had them repainted without polishing anything. They look terrible (really dull).
If you go ahead and get this done please post pictures when you get them back. I may want to re-do mine in the future and this sounds like a good way to go. Good luck.
