1986 Trans Am Colors RED

I have a friend he has owned a 1986 Trans Am The color since new, he is the FIRST owner and he still has the Window sticker, and the SPID sheet is still intact. The car is an early 86 and it has the Upper color of Red, and the lower color (Ground Effects) are Silver.

My question is this, as I do not know (Imagine that)...

The Window Sticker only has 81U (primary Color) and does not indicate the lower Silver. ALSO the SPID sheet only has the 81U & U8774 (or whatever the WA number is...

Its perplexing as my 87 has the upper and lower colors listed EVEN though the Lower Color was Manditory with the Yellow Upper... and my 1989 (which is the same primary Red color as his 1986) has the U8774 & L8774 colors on the SPID sheet...

Does anyone know why the lower color was not listed on neither the SPID sheet or the Original Window Sticker, he does not have the DX1 Stripe Delete on the SPID either...

Re: 1986 Trans Am Colors RED

It doesn't make sense to me either, especially since you could get monotone paint on an '86 T/A (meaning the same color ground effects as the upper color, usually separated with a tape stripe), for certain body colors such as black or white.

I do know that in the latter part of the '80s, the silver ground effects were required with some body colors on the T/A--bright red or blue, as examples. The silver ground effect cars would generally not have tape stripes, although I have seen them on some '85-'86 cars. The '87 GTA was the first thirdgen T/A available in monotone bright red.

Maybe the fact that silver ground effects were mandated for an '86 bright red T/A is why they didn't feel the need to spell out the lower color?

I dunno, but I've seen an 86 monotone and I'm positive it came that way.

Re: 1986 Trans Am Colors RED

Here is a Kicker, we were looking through all of his literature and there is a Red over Red T/A in the sales brochure (with the little stripe)

His car has the decal stripe as well as the lower Silver...

BUT still what REALLY gets me is my 1989 has Both the Upper and Lower and it indicates the SAME color, which the car is... His is obviously a two tone but only indicates a single color... I thought that maybe the dealership may have painted the Ground effects, but where the paint is worn off the silver GFX there is no evidence of red...

my 87 base T/A had body color gfx and no tape stripes, I'm positive it came from the factory this way too.

and since 84 was the first year for the spid maybe they were still working out the kinks in it during 86 and didn't print everything until 1987. just a thought..

That was my thought also, assuming your friend bought the car new off the lot and did not order it. When did he purchase the car, early or later in the year? Just guessing...But maybe the dealer was having a hard time moving the car and deceided to give it a kick by painting it silver. Did that dealership have a body shop? If they didn't I don't see them sending it out.

You are right, I guess the GTA just popped to mind because they were all monotone.

I might have misspoken on the monotone red not being available earlier, too. I don't recall ever actually seeing an '85-'86 T/A in bright red without the silver ground effects, but my observations don't constitute hard fact.

However, I am still pretty certain you could not get a monotone blue T/A, at least through '86. (Unless someone proves me wrong, again)

Re: 1986 Trans Am Colors RED

Thats goofy, no code to indicate a painted lower, even though it is painted.

Two tone was std on 85 T/A's, monochrome schemes were special order with individual Upper and Lower codes displaying the same color code.

This one breaks the rules

Re: 1986 Trans Am Colors RED

Actually 1985 & 1986 cars were available in a monotone. The Duo Tone was NOT manditory for ALL colors... I have the 1985 but am not going to post it unless someone gives me grief, BUT in 1986 at least there were 6 colors that were manditory with the secondary color and 6 colors that were not.

I KNOW that there are always things in the booklets that are not 100% accurate, bUt I have seen 1986 & 1985 T/A's that were monotone...

As the case with my friends it could have gone either way.

Re: 1986 Trans Am Colors RED

The lower color (or GFX color) is designated by the "WW?" RPO code. It is on the SPID and Invoice.

Re: 1986 Trans Am Colors RED

Ok, I will look for that...

If it is a WW number then that would be unusual as most of the Color RPO's are like 13L, 13 is the color, and L indicates Lower...

I have the 85 merchandiser book and will look.

The way it was explained to me is if you ordered an 85 black T/A without specifying the lower color you got it gold.

Mine is all black with the correct upper and lower codes, so yea I know they made em.

Re: 1986 Trans Am Colors RED

WW2... Interesting, I have never seen that before...

--------------

That sounds about right, for the most part it was "Standard" and the stripe was deletable on some colors...

Re: 1986 Trans Am Colors RED

To be technical, ALL of the Trans Am’s had the same upper (primary) and lower color code listed.

82-84, the lower color (accent) was default by the particular primary color.

84 Trans Am’s with the GFX, certain primary colors only had one choice of GFX color, while others had a choice of GFX color determined by the particular primary color AND Interior Trim; i.e. a Dark Briar Brown TA could only have Silver GFX, while a White TA depending what color interior could have Black, Gold, or Silver GFX. The same upper and lower color was not available. The 15th Anniversary TA being the exception.

Starting in 85 the same color primary and GFX was available for White, Black, Light Chestnut Metallic, and Maroon. The other primary colors had only one choice. The Interior Trim determined stripe, Graphics & Hood decal, and wheel color on all. A 85 Black TA with Black GFX with Camel Interior would have a Chestnut/Yellow-Orange stripe, Chestnut Graphics & Hood decal, and Light Chestnut Wheel color. The same with Medium Gray, Black, or Carmine Interior would have Silver/Red-Orange Stripe, Silver Graphics & Hood decal, and Charcoal Wheel color.

Here are the W62 Aero Package Color RPO codes used 85-up

WW1 = WHITE
WW2 = SILVER METALLIC
WW3 = GUNMETAL METALLIC
WW4 = BLACK
WW5 = GOLD METALLIC
WW6 = FLAME RED METALLIC OR BRILLIANT RED METALLIC (DEPENDING ON YEAR)
WW7 = MEDIUM SAND GRAY OR MEDIUM MAUI BLUE METALLIC (DEPENDING ON YEAR)
WW8 = BRIGHT RED

The Firebird SE listed the upper primary and its’ the lower accent RPO.
