Third Gen on Horsepower tv?
I'm not sure if this is the right section for this. Anyways, did anybody catch Horsepower TV Sunday? I was flipping through the channels and right before the beginning of "Trucks" they had that one girl that talks in between the shows and she was standing beside a green '91 or '92 Camaro. I'm pretty sure she was in the Horsepower TV studio. All I could see of the camaro was the front end and I didn't see any fog lights, so I'm guessing it was an RS. I was just wondering if the guys on Horsepower was doing any upgrades to it on their show.
It would be cool to see them work on a third gen. I've seen lots of fox body Mustangs and 4th generation Camaros on the show, but never any third gens!

I think I caught a glimps of it on there dyno. I think it will be in the next show.
Speaking of the show TRUCKS, Those guys brought the 454SS and the Ford Lightning to our local track a few weeks ago. They filmed both racing. I didnt find out the results, but I think it will air either this weekend or in the next few.

There calling it the "Lean Green Street Machine", it starts airing in about 3 weeks. Its an 86 RS. They are doing a budget build on it. I'm really interested to see what they do as I think they are sticking with the 305.

Re: Third Gen on Horsepower tv?
and of coure they have to pick the dog of a 305 to build. they did a 91/92 f-bird with a lo3 tbi 305 a long time ago. they nver made more than like 220hp. they should really do a tuned port motor. and do heads, cam, intake mods and strap on a procharger. then it would be a good 305 build..hhhmm that sounded familiar.

All it had was intake manifold/headers/exhaust.
I worked on that car many times.
It now has MPFI 406 and is up for sale for 12K
probably back to the old owner

I saw the car too, I like that there going to do a third gen camaro but i wish they would have pick out one that has more factory hp, I think it'll be an upset and no surprise when they come up with low hp gains... I'll be watching away. Does anyone remember the other third gen camaro they did i think it was primer gray with a big block

yea that primer grey one was one of the ppl who did work their who raced it it had sbc and they were istalling a nitrous kit. the "lean green street machine" is supposed to be their way of trying show how to make power and keep fuel economy, they going to keep the 305.

Yeah I dont see them getting very far hp wise with TBI, they will probably change to port injection, atleast I hope they will. I would like to see something decent done with a 3rd gen.

I agree, I hope this build goes well. They will either build the 305 and keep it at that or I see an lsx in the engine bay. Either way it's nice to see a third gen on tv.

I just watched it, and have to say was a little disappointed. The gains were 2 mpg and like 9 hp. I wish they would do a LTx or LSx swap, now that would be cool.

Re: Third Gen on Horsepower tv?
it's a 92 rs 305. 600 budget. It put down 144 hp base on the dyno. Today they switched to a Hypertech chip and t-stat, put in royal purple fluids, tb spacer, plugs/wires/coil/ign./module/cap and rotor. They did a build your own cold air intake kit (cool kit). 2.1 mpg increase and a 9 hp increase.

Re: Third Gen on Horsepower tv?
At the end of stage one the hp level was 153 at the rear. they say that there are 3 stages, But I am not holding my breath on anything spectacular. If they just converted to tune port I bet you they could show some gains in hp and mileage( good for the intent of the whole build) and it would cost less than 600 depending on where they picked the parts up.
cheers!!

The second episode of the series is on right now. As we speak they have installed hedman shorties and Y pipe, to a hearthrob 3' exhaust. also installed were an electric waterpump and a summit electric fan that flows roughly 1520cfm. OHH, and a shift kit for the 700R4 too.

Just watched it. I can't wait to see what they do next. They said it was going to be in a couple of weeks.
I know they're measuring their horsepower and torque gains at the rear wheels. I wonder how much it's making at the flywheel?

Re: Third Gen on Horsepower tv?
I know they are going for fuel economy, but it would be so much more interesting if they did a ls1 swap. Instead of showing the same old tips and tricks that have been around. Its great to see a 3rd gen on tv but at the same time its somewhat boring. Another thing to they only have a 600.00 budget, but they said they spent 380 on the exhaust. So with all the other parts they have already put on, wouldn't it seem they are over budget and they still havent finished? What do you guys think did I not hear correctly or do they have 600 to spend for every show they do on the car?

Not boring at all. It's actually something different. The LS1 has been seen done so many times on tv. I can definitely use this as help.

Re: Third Gen on Horsepower tv?
For being a budget build, I think they're doing a good job. Just remember they are not trying to go for a straight hp build ( kinda contradicts the show's name though). Really interested to see what stage 3 is going to be. Its a sweet lookin rs too but those dyno pulls were kind of embarrassing for 3rd gen owners imo.

Re: Third Gen on Horsepower tv?
Too bad its only a $600 budget... I spent that on my exhaust 8 yearsago...
A nice LS1 or LT1 with a tall gear would reip about 30 to 35 Mpg with the right tune... I know of people with ROADMASTERS getting 33 Mpg highway, and Park Ave's getting 34.5 Mph hwy... So an engine swap may not be a bad way to go with the way Gas prices are going...

Re: Third Gen on Horsepower tv?
Im just saying all the info they are doing on this show is where? Right here, the chip, the aftermarket exhaust, fans, etc. I was just saying for what they are doing it seemd like a ls1 swap would be a better show, and be more interesting. Especially for those that are currently doing the swap or looking into the option. A very detailed swap into the the third gen would be more interesting. But like btown said the dyno numbers are embarrassing. besides the host (mike) I believe thats his name stated they are trying to show how you can have a hot rod and get fuel mileage. Well when i think hot rod I dont really think of our 305 tbi cars in that category, yes they good motors but not hot rod motors. Hey 92 stage 2 was on yesterday if you missed it read klause83z28 post and you got what happened, i cant remember the hp number i think around 160-164 range and 220 on torque with 22 mpg on a 100 mile trip. At the end they said it would be 2 weeks till the last stage would be on. Oh and for those that watched it I found it somewhat funny when they did the burnout, the camera guy zoomed into to get the shot but was on the driver side lol, they did a real quick snap over to the pass side since its an open rear.

Yea, stage 2 they got 22.5 MPG and a gain of 11 HP. recap stage 1 they got a 2.1 MPG mileage improvement and a gain of 9 HP. I would like to see a LS1 swap and a turbo thrown in but don't think it's going to happen but I still like the show a lot.

Re: Third Gen on Horsepower tv?
Yeah, however HP TV will never do a swap with used components. And if they did an engine swap they'd never bother with converting the harness. They'd call their buddies at Painless and have a custom harness created.
If they did an LS1 swap they'd be out at least $6 grand by the time they were done with it, and it would still be a stock LS1.

it seems that way in all their programs. whenever the wiring looks the least bit hard they get a wiring harness made by painless. its easier on them i guess but not on whatever viewer wants to do the same swap yet not break his pocket.

Its not that they need a new wiring harness, nor are they wasting money.
Painless is either paying them to use a painless harness or painless is just giving them a harness to use so their name gets thrown around in the business... The reason most parts are new on that show is because they are given to them. Their budget comes in as if they were paying for the parts... I also wish they would have started with a stock L98 motor. The numbers starting off would have been more respectful. Oh well, maybe in the future.

I would think they used an TBI car because that's the car someone had for the show. But I would also think that TBI cars are more "common" than TPI cars, just because so many more TBI cars were produced than TPI cars. But I'm just speculating.

Re: Third Gen on Horsepower tv?
Let me stir the pot some more. I wanted to say this for those of you out there that are all about what these guys are doing and claiming what the cost on it is. I still havent heard if they have 600 per show to spend or 600 flat for the entire project. Either way they have blowed their budget (like they really have one). In episode 2 they did several mods, well i am at work and bored so a i added a few of them up.
Exhaust $380.00 (per host)
Converter lockup $186.13
T.B.I spacer $83.65
total so far $649.78
B&M shift kit $34.11
K&N oil filter $9.99
Royal Purple Oil $7.98 each
total $733.78
As i said that is leaving off some other items and not including the mods from episode 1. So for a budget of 600 bucks they blowed it just on these items by $133.78. I just wanted to let those guys know especially the younger guys around here not to totally believe what they are telling us. I just know that when i was 17 that i spent every penny on my car and got misleaded a few times. And with the economy sucking at this time just dont want anyones feelings to get stepped on. I have also emailed hp tv and asked them the same questions, so if they answer il post their response.

total $733.78
As i said that is leaving off some other items and not including the mods from episode 1. So for a budget of 600 bucks they blowed it just on these items by $133.78. I just wanted to let those guys know especially the younger guys around here not to totally believe what they are telling us. I just know that when i was 17 that i spent every penny on my car and got misleaded a few times. And with the economy sucking at this time just dont want anyones feelings to get stepped on. I have also emailed hp tv and asked them the same questions, so if they answer il post their response.

Re: Third Gen on Horsepower tv?
I'm lol at this bc When I got my 91 rs 6 years ago this is almost the exact same mods I did of course maybe diff manufactures but same mods execpt the converter lock up, my own chip burn, and I did better ignition. After all that my car failed emmisions test miserably. That is why i decied to swap to tpi in the first place.

Blowed =/= word. Example: He blowed chunks
Proper use = He blew chunks.
I'm sensing that you like to use "ed" at the ended of everied worded.

On another note, I agree that starting with a TBI car was a waste, considering the fuel injection setup, cam and heads it come with. GM and SLP proved that a 305TPI could definitely move a car well with the 91/92 SLP bolt-on package available on the F-bodies. Enough to propel a 5spd 305TPI car into the low 14's and high 13's on occasion.
Perhaps the car was donated by a kid who worked there, and he happened to have a TBI car, so thats what they worked with. They should have just done shorties and a cat-back.
The B&M shift kit was a mistake, Transgo is the ONLY way to go.
