Vintage plates and city sticker

I went to a car show and found a guy that had year specific plates and city stickers for sale. He offered to hook me up with a free set because hes also a Veteran. A week past and I went to pick up the plates. He gave me these. Now I thought the plates for Illinois in 1983 were the ones on my avatar. Well I took them because you can't be pickey with free stuff.

Anyone know what the plates looked like in 1983 in Illinois and also anyone know If there are aftermarket plates. I know there are folks that sell plates for Kitt and Bandit replicas.

Thanks in advance for your help.

As I remember those plates look accurate. I don't remember the Joliet city sticker even though I went to college close by at the time. I would assume it is correct. The plate in the avitar started mid to late 90's.

OK. I might be missing something here, but you can't throw just any plate on your car. Does Illinois let you register your car with a retroactive license plate?

Re: Vintage plates and city sticker

I got historical plates for my '82 TA and I live in Ohio. Granted each state has it's own laws regarding this I'm sure. Anyway, in Ohio you can also put year specific plates on your car. A while back I got some plates off of Ebay for my '82. In ohio all license plates looked the same from '82-'84. When I went to get my plates I took the old one. Turns out I couldn't use it since it has an '83 tag on it. I asked them why since all the plates were the same from '82-'84. They told me yes that is true, but I need the correct year sticker on it. Since it was from '83 I couldn't use it. I just have the historical plates now, but when I can find some '82's with the correct tag I'll probably have them swapped.

I'd check with your laws regarding year specific plates and tags. I didn't know the plates even needed the same year tags on them already until I was at the BMV getting my plates. As far as replica aftermarket, I'm sure you cannot use them. The old plates have to have been registered with the state, and the number will then be transfered to your car.

The plate in his avitar started somewhere in the 80's. I know they were the first plates I had when I bought my Firebird in '89. However, I'm pretty certain the free ones you got are correct for '83. I know they were used in '82 and I think for a few years after that. I think they changed in the mid 80's.

Re: Vintage plates and city sticker

I know that the plates in the avitar had to be around in the early 80s. Reason being is this, I have a set of plates that were issued back in 1990, and on the bottom where the sticker goes, it says 83/84 sticker and 85/86 sticker. I think that the plates in the avitar first came out in 83 and that may have been a multiple plate year. The plates you were given are period correct for the late 70's and early 80s for sure and were probably around in 83 as well while the new style plates were being issued.
Also, Illinois law states that if the vehicle is registered with Antique Veh plates, it can run period correct lic plates for vanity purposes, so you can reg yours as an AV car (25 yrs old) and run those plates and be legal.
I am running Illinois Pontiac Manufacturer plates from 1991 on the GTA. Those cannot be registered so I have the actual plates are registered to the car in the back seat in case I get pulled over. But in the 100 miles a year I put on that car I doubt that will be an issue!

Re: Vintage plates and city sticker

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you guys. I didn't plan on driving with these plates. I just wanted them to put them on at the car gatherings here in town. We have one every week for a couple of hours every wednesday and there are no other 3rd gens at all so mine tends to get alot of attention.

Actually, I have purple heart plates so I'll be keeping those. They tend to be get out of ticket cards. Seriously, cops are always waving at me and not giving me that "I bet he's a speeder" look I used to get all the time in my Firebird.
Also I found a site with information for the plates, based on what the site said, it would appear that I have 82 plates (cant be pickey with free stuff) with 83 sticker on one side and 84 sticker on the other. I guess depending on when the car left the dealership, it could have been either these or the one on the avitar wich was used untill 2001.

Below is the link with information about Illionois plates.

Sounds good. I am free Thursday. Anymore info on the Plainfield cruise like times and exact address. I plan to get the Niterider out a bit more in July and August starting this week. good weather expected for the holidays so why not. I also believe Chicago Heights has a nice fourth show. Pmail or post more info on both Plainfield and Joliet. Thanks.
