Strange RPO question

My car has the code E7Z, which is apparently speedometer delete according to a search on the forum. The RPO decoder didnt have it listed. The question is, why does my car have this code when it has a speedometer?
Thanks in advance

Re: Strange RPO question

I am not 100% positive on this, but I think it has to do with the fact that from 1986 thru 1989 Camaros ALL used a cable driven speedometer. The Firebird however used an Electronic speedometer (no cable) unless you did not opt for the Gage package on the Base Firebird...

To the best of my recollection this RPO is not usually on Firebirds, and all of the threads that I can reacall have been about a camaro. With that said it also seems to me the all of the camaros were from 1986 thru 1989 where the question was posted.

IIRC With a Firebird the Speedometer signal goes thru the ECM, so it looks like this.
Trans -> Speed sensor -> ECM -> Speedometer...

The Camaros since they have a Cable are like this IIRC...
Trans -> Speedomter Cable -> Speedometer -> Sensor for the ECM.

I have not looked at the schematics but I want to think thats how they work. Someone Correct me if I am wrong.

SO with that said it makes sence to me that the Speedometer Delete Key had to do with something and the Speedometer cable...

In my brief search, I found that the TTA's in 1989 also had the E7Z RPO... That would be interesting to learn to why.

Re: Strange RPO question

Look at the RPO again. It should not say speedometer delete. I think it says vehicle speed sensor delete or something like that.

Thats just what it said when i searched the forum. It came up as an error on the RPO decoder.

Re: Strange RPO question

I found that the GTA's had a E5Z RPO and E9Z RPO which were all similar, (Thanks Frankie)
E5Z -- Adapter, Speedometer (Delete) -- A.
E9Z -- Key, Speedometer (Delete) -- A

I did not find the RPO's in my booklet, which is interesting indeed. Furthermore what is probably the most interesting is this group is one of the FEW RPO groups that reference a "Delete" Most RPO's are for things ADDED to a car, rather than a deletion. The only other RPO that comes to mind that is a Delete RPO is the WX1 which is Lower stripe delete.
