My 1988 IROC has a speedometer that reads in kilometers, the temp gauge reads in celcius and I guess the oil pressure reads in kilograms. The odometer shows 193,000 kilometers, but when the car came to the USA in early 2000 someone put the wrong miles on it when registering it in Washington state. So the carfax shows a problem with miles. I believe the kilometers are correct milage for the car.

But now I have the car here in Georgia and have purchased an new gauge package from another camaro that reads all American. My question is , shoukd I change it out and further screw up the milage readings? Im trying to keep this car as original as I can, it is in very good shape and only needs a little paint on the hood to make it perfect. It is also free from any rust even after being in Canada and the state of Washington for its first 15 years of its life.

If you wanted to change the speedometer keep a few things in mind.

I would first contact someone with your state DMV, someone who KNOWS, not a person who just works for the DMV, or you can talk to your state police possibly, or a lawyer who knows what your laws are.

I do know that tampering with a Odometer is illegal to roll back the milage. It s a federal offense. If you find out it is LEGAL in then here is what I would do:

1) take note of the KM on your old speedo
2) Calculate the miles based upon the KM reading.
3) with your new speedo, adjust the Miles to what they would be based on your calculations. ( Keep in mind its tricky to get the numbers all lined back up so they are not off) . Take pictures of both the speedometers side by side and then install the new one into the car.

I would definately check with the legality of it all before you go to far.

I have done this personally, I wanted a 140Mph speedo and I found out that the Odometers were all the same for the Firebird speedos. So When I swapped out the speedos I just used my old odometer with the electronics of the new speedometer it worked like a charm. Besides the new odometer had 200K on it...

Like I said CHECK with your state & local people to see what is legal. Since your doing a swap from KM to Miles they may want you to take it to someone who is independant.

The car is so old in most states it's excempt from mileage statements.

Good idea to check if its legal. But I'm not trying to alter the odometer and decieve anyone. In Georgia as long as it is disclosed that the miles are not correct then its ok.

I'm more concerned that It wouldnt be in its original condition.

The idea about taking a photo of both speedometers is a very good idea. I will look at trying to set the speedometer I bought back to zero.

I dont think I'm not going to change it now, my thoughts are like yours 871LEIROC, it was made that way and I want it to stay original.

Enough cars have been altered riding around out there.

Keep it the way it is. Even though its just a speedo its about keeping the car original as possible.

oil pressure would be kilopascals.

I'd keep everything as is. You still have mph on the speedometer as is.

I too vote for leave it as is. Or if you decide to do the swap call the state police vehicle fraud investigation unit in your state. They will tell you the correct procedure. I know in Pa if you change or replace a speedometer/ odometer you have to disclose the original mileage of the old cluster, mileage of new cluster and difference in miles conspicuously in the door jam. Remember odometer fraud is a FELONY. It would be a shame to get pinched for something like that on account of carelessness. Just my $.02 -Bob
