WS6 Bird ???

i found a WS6 bird in a friends yard, a tree has fallen on it, but the TPI motor and all is still in it, just has tree damage LOL was wondering if it would be worth it to get it and strip it for parts and if so what parts of a WS6 would be desireable, (the rear end is mine allready), im not sure of the year but its a newer third gen, has ALOT of radio controls on the steering wheel, also what should i offer him, it has all 4 factory gold lace wheels also

Re: WS6 Bird ???

Depends on 305 or 350. Depends on if it is running or not. It also depends on where the damage is.

Re: WS6 Bird ???

yea, its totaled, the roof and back hatch are crushed, but the rest of the interior is good, and the drive train is good, its got well under 100k on it...
need to check the emission label and rpo's later, but i was told it was a 350 by the previous owner, but you know how people are about that sometimes

its got 4 wheel disks
all the audio controlls in the steering wheel
the gold lace wheels

just to name a few
----------
oh and it will run

Re: WS6 Bird ???

It would be a shame to part it since it's a fairly desireable car. If parting it is the only option, it'd be a good donor for a basemodel car. Strip both cars, and build one good one with the parts from the GTA. The entire drivetrain, cooling system, exhaust, interior, suspension, etc is all an upgrade from a base model Firebird.

Re: WS6 Bird ???

Usually you'll end up with a lot of parts you can't sell since they're too large or heavy to ship. Shouldn't be hard to make $500 back off it, the stripped shell will bring $150-200 in scrap.

Re: WS6 Bird ???

Aww heck I say use it for a parts car. It would never be the same anyways. The only other option would be to buy another car and cut the top off of both of them and put this one back together.

Anything can be fixed.

Re: WS6 Bird ???

yea well $500, and to get the good real end with disks and maybe a few other parts that will fit my car is will worth it, i will sell the trans to a freind that wants a 4 speed and not a 3, then take the 350 TPI and sell the TPI part and then build it the way i want it for TBI (im not hacking my car up to put TPI on it no way not going to happen no matter what you say LOL) then part out desierable parts on it and hell i should get my money back easy and plus get the rear end i want, and a 350 block its a win win situation no matter what

Hey just a thought here but you ever think the motor is probably worth more whole rather than just the induction? I mean I bought a 4 bolt main 350 complete from carb to oil pan for 325, yes it neede rebuilt but 350 are cheap and dime a dozen. Hey good luck -not tryin to tell you what to do just an idea, oh yea that poor GTA what a shame I love those cars

WS6 was a suspension package. Nothing to do with 305 or 350.

If the vehicle has the radio controls in the steering wheel as the author stated, and it's originally equipped, then it probably won't have the 91-92 Trans AM/GTA taillights because it isn't a 91-92. The radio controls in the steering wheel was no longer available in 90-92 due to the driver airbag. Sounds like this vehicle is an 88-89.

I was aiming more towards value, nothing about the WS6 suspension.

Re: WS6 Bird ???

Actually the IROC suspension for the most part I belive was different than the WS6, the IROC used 34mm fronts and the WS6 used 36mm fronts. I belive the 1LE cars used the WS6 suspension pieces.

The WS6 consisted of: (1986 ~ 1992)
-36mm front and 24mm rear sway bars
-Fast ratio steering box
-16" x 8" Wheels
-245/50R16 Tires.
-Gas filled Shocks & Struts.

PArt of the reason for the Wondserbar was the difference between Chevrolet and Pontiac and their philosophy. Chevrolet wanted a harder ride, more like a race car, Pontiac wanted a softer more comfortable ride.

John

Yeah. I could just never figure out why WS6 didn't get the Wonder Bar too.

Re: WS6 Bird ???

I suspect if you put the Wonderbar on the WS6 they may have outperformed the IROC, it may habe been a marketing thing, who knows.

Of course I have seen a one owner 1989 Formulas with the Wonderbar, who claim it came that way...

Re: WS6 Bird ???

At least they are cheap enough to add these days to get some better handling. I have one. Real easy install and it is pretty noticeable. Why would the WS6 have a 36mm and try to get a softer ride while the Iroc got a 34mm for a harder ride. Wouldn't the thicker one have a harder ride?

The bars don't really affect ride, just cornering. If the WS6 springs are softer than the IROC ones, that could explain it. Springs softer for the softer ride, but stiffer sway bars for handling.

Hmmm....IROC springs + WS6 sway bars & Wonder Bar = best of both stock worlds? Hmmmmm

Re: WS6 Bird ???

I'm just going to cut mine. Actually, cut my spare set of WS6 springs & just swap them all out, then sell my current WS6 springs.

By cutting them, I raise the spring rate just a tad, and lower it to boot!

So, I actually increase the possible handling, get a lower ride height, yet don't noticeably hurt the ride comfort. Went that route before, autocrossed the car, and suffered no ill effects, so before anybody scream 'Cutting springs is a hack job, do it right.'.....I've done it twice before & autocrossed both cars and LOVED them both!

Here's my old autocross car...I always used a angle grinder or good sawzall, with the spring setting in a 5 gal bucket of water but the spring setting up out of the water just enough to reach, to disperse any heat generated by cutting. Heat is what kills springs.
