Re: how to get rpos from vin
there is an organization called the pontiac historical society i bleive, they can take your Vin number and give you a print out of your RPOs (small fee), i'm not positive about camaro's but i believe there is an organization devoted to that, and you can up to a certain year, go to your GM dealer and they can give you an RPO print out...i just went to check on my '88 and it seems they have gotten too old, but the pontiac dealer was willing to check for me, so it is possible.

A copy of the factory invoice or billing history card for your Pontiac.
A letter decoding the options (where necessary).
A copy of the dealer order form for that year.
Other specific information for that year and model Pontiac (where available).
and the site is

Re: how to get rpos from vin
yea i didn't know much about it...i just knew it was possible, and people always said a small fee, i agree $50 isn't small but i guess if your interested in knowing what you have i guess everything comes with a price. Other than them no there is no more ways to check i suppose.
Was there actually a second sticked put back by the glove box??? Or was that just a second place they put it at times, becuase i've only seen them in the center console.

Re: how to get rpos from vin
What year is your car? Going by you name it's a 1988 GTA and if thats the case PHS cannot help you, I belive they can only do up to 1987. You can still get an invoice from GM through General Motors Media Archives (GMMA) by email at vehicleinvoice@gmmediaarchive.com the fee for this is $50 also and all you get is the invoice.

Re: how to get rpos from vin
You can get an RPO list from the VIN. It can be done at any GM dealer's parts counter.
About 10 years ago was at a GM dealer buying some rear hatch struts for the GTA. The parts guy typed my VIN into the parts computer and it generated a list of my car's RPO codes. The list matched the codes on my SPID sticker. He read it and said "You have the aero package so you need the stronger strut". Then he printed it out and handed it to me... I didn't ask him to do this and he didn't charge me for it. I think he just did it to impress me
But, I understand there is a cutoff date.. I've heard they don't keep this data online indefinitely.

Re: how to get rpos from vin
Recently Pontiac took back all their records for '88 and newer vehicles from PHS. Jim Mattison seemed kind of miffed about it. PHS can only supply dealer invoices for '87 and older Pontiacs now. There was an article about it in one of the Pontiac maginzines earlier this year.

Dear Pontiac Enthusiast:
I would like to introduce Pontiac Historic Services to you. This independent firm has been authorized by Pontiac Division to meet the increasing demand for historic information from Pontiac owners, restorers, collectors, enthusiasts, and buffs who are looking for specific information on their Pontiac. Pontiac Historic Services is comprised of Pontiac enthusiasts who are extremely knowledgeable and capable of handling your requests.
Over the past few years, it has become increasingly difficult for Pontiac Division to fill these requests on a timely basis. Therefore, we have turned to Pontiac Historic Services, which will perform this service for 1961 through 1997 model years. (Information for post 1997 models will continue to be handled by the Pontiac Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-762-2737)
Of course, Pontiac Public Relations will continue to answer general questions about our current and past models. If you seek information that you feel should not be handled by Pontiac Historic Services, please contact me or any other member of the Pontiac Public Relations Staff.

Re: how to get rpos from vin
Like stated on above post, walk into a GM dealer and give the parts guy counter your vin and they will print out the RPO list. I did this when I was trying to purchase a replacement manual shifter plate, the guy wanted to make sure that my car was manual. I asked how would I get this sheet he told me all you have to do it bring the VIN and ask, it's free, so I did in order to make sure the RPO's matched the console. So try a GM dealer, here in Cali we have some very cooperative GM parts guys.

Re: how to get rpos from vin
Worked for me on my '89, but that was 7 years ago here in Canada. I've heard that our US friends had more trouble at the dealer and with more years gone by this route may not work.
But you have nothing to lose by trying, and many would like to hear if it works.

Re: how to get rpos from vin
GM deleted the Vin & RPO data base on cars more then 10 yrs old. It was a dealer wide system and not one at local dealership. So try all you want and you will get nothing on 3rd gen cars or any other models.

Re: how to get rpos from vin
I had no problem getting the rpo's for my 1988 GTA or my 1989 Firebird. It seems that the system in Canada started in 1980 - the US lagged a little.
I've since tried for a number of GTA owners (US) but have had no luck. It seems the VIN can be deciphered but no rpo's. I've left it with my local GM dealership and their parts guys to find out why. In the meantime, Pontiac Historical Services (US) or Vintage Vehicle Services (Canada) may be able to supply the rpo's - for a fee of about $50.
Best regards,
Gary.

Re: how to get rpos from vin
all my 82 has on it is the body tag on the rad support, and the vin plate
everything else is long gone
'
no build sheet, no door stickers, no anything else
no clue what options it had originally
and never will know
GM USA was total crap about keeping records
kept none
zero
you are SOL if you live here in the states and dont have your build sheet or RPO sticker
whats funny about the cars is that they didnt get rpo stickers til 84
yet the trucks all had them starting in 67
its funny like that haha
the canucks dont seem to understand just how much they didnt keep RPO and other records down here
at all
no idea
they were basically tossed as soon as the cars came off the assembly line
i wonder why canada keeps records however?
thats odd..
hmm
good luck!
