Rarity of rear defrost on later years?

It has always irked me that my 91 T/A does not have rear defrost -- I consider this a must have, even if it were an economy car. I have noticed that far fewer 90-92 cars have rear defrost than earlier third gens, is there a reason for this? Problems with the defrost grid on the 90-up style glass? Did GM have problems getting enough rear defrost glasses in stock and restrict this to a special order only option? Or did people just stop looking for cars that had it?

Re: Rarity of rear defrost on later years?

I've had 2 1992 camaros and both of them have had the rear defroster.

I've never noticed on other cars whether they've had it or not, but since you mention it i will be on the look out...

Re: Rarity of rear defrost on later years?

I think it has to do with your geographical location. Up here in Wisconsin I'd have to say 99% of the 3rd-gens I've looked at have had rear defrost.

Re: Rarity of rear defrost on later years?

never had one that wasnt rear defrost but i finally saw my first one and still own the glass from the 82 when my aunt had to replace it when it got smashed out, she bought a clear one

i removed it in favor of a defroster one off an 87 camaro i junked

so put a defroster one on your car its an easy swap all you need is a tube of black urethane sealer from the glass shop

Re: Rarity of rear defrost on later years?

I'm not sure about our Firebird cousins, but the 3rd gen Camaros had the RPO C49 (rear window defogger) in every year from '82 - '92.
The percentage of units with the rear glass (as opposed to the convertibles) that had RPO C49 ranged from a high of 71% in '86 to a low of 58% in '89.
In other words approximately two-thirds of all rear glass 3rd gen Camaros had rear window defogger. So it was fairly common in all years.
It's only my guess, but the same likely might apply to the Firebirds.
But, as Dens71TA mentioned, where you live can change those percentages.

Re: Rarity of rear defrost on later years?

Almost seems like I see more Camaros than Firebirds with the option; although I can't think of any reason why the different car line would make a difference in this case. Oh well. I guess I'm just still waiting for the day when a 90-92 goes in to the Pull-A-Part with rear glass defrost that hasn't had a sub-par tint job

Every third gen I have seen always had defrost. I thoguht it was more rare seeing them without rear defrost than the other way around.

Wow, learn something new every day. I thought every car built since the '50's had defrost, end of story. I didn't think it was an option, I thought it was like headlights, or a drivers seat - just implied.
I can honestly say i've never even SEEN a car without rear defrost, that would be just hilarious. You need to post a picture, that would really blow my mind.

Re: Rarity of rear defrost on later years?

just picked up a '91 formula hatch for the spoiler and it has rear defrost...it's outta jersey so idk. Shouldn't be hard to swap if you wanted, but like mentioned above, i thought it was rare to NOT have it...i just parted out a BARE '87, no a/c, basic guages (MPH and Gas), i mean BARE, and that even had rear defrost, but that was an '87, and as mentioned above, proportionally there was a better chance of finding it in '87. Good luck!

Re: Rarity of rear defrost on later years?

my '82 Trans Am DOES NOT have rear defrost...but then again, it was a Texas car so I'm sure it really wouldn't be needed. Of course me living in Ohio it is pretty much a necessity, but I don't drive it in the winter months. I'm sure it would be a credit option, back when you could pretty much pick and choose what options you wanted, vs. having them put in "groups" in later years.

My 91 'Bird was originally a New York car. It's got the rear defroster. Most of the cars I've seen down here in Texas have them too.

Re: Rarity of rear defrost on later years?

I figured since it is mostly warm in texas there wouldn't really be a need for a rear defroster, I'm sure you would get a credit for it...mine also doesn't have the rear hatch release.

Re: Rarity of rear defrost on later years?

Rear Defrost was an option, and as stated above they are more common than uncommon, but your location will change how many you see.

My 86 Z28 was ordered without defrost, and it came out of auburn indiana

This car was also a V8 5spd non-AC with very few other options, ( i think the only other options were the radio and power driver seat)

Re: Rarity of rear defrost on later years?

The rear defrost was an option on any car every year from 82-92 (possible exception would be the 1LE equiped cars but I do not think it was a limitation) I have seen GTA's without the rear defrost as well. Out of the cars I have owned the cars which were originally delivered to a dealer in the northern states (typically MI) had the option, but the couple of cars that were shipped to Flordia or Arizona did not have the option. Its like Tinted Glass, most of our cars came with a light Green tint but a few have clear, typically speaking non AC cars have clear and AC equipped cars would have the green tint.

Re: Rarity of rear defrost on later years?

My 91 RS doesnt have the rear defrost, even though it had the option for the V8, and my gfs brother used to have an 86 IROC LB9 that didnt either...

But I guess in Southern Cali, rear defrosters are not as important as in the Northern states

I agree, I have a rear defroster on my car too. The option I never see and would much rather have over the defroster would be the rear wiper option. I tend to see them on high end T/A's and that's about it. Come to think about it I have never seen a rear wiper equippted camaro.

Cheers!!

I've also got a Texas Camaro, 1991 RS, that does not have the defrost. I was always under the impression it was a geographical thing as well.
