Tach with Z28 logo

Did any camaros really come from the factory with a Z28 logo in the tach? I was just looking at one that says it was a rare option. If they did, what years did this logo come on? What reason was it put on some and not on others?

I remember seeing them in the Classic Industries catalogue years ago.

Re: Tach with Z28 logo

I have one of the dealer option,as 83Chevy_Camaro stated, that was offered from '82-'83 to replace the 85 mph dual needle version. There are a couple differences between the dealer option and the aftermarket one on Ebay
1 - Aftermarket version has a 6 digit odometer,I thought I'd saved a picture of it as there isn't one on Ebay now(but didn't).
2 - If you notice where the trip odometer and odometer placement are reversed. They are placed as the '82-'84 dual needle version. You have to use a clear lens from a '82-'84 if you get one.Again I don't remember if the Aftermarket/Ebay one is the same or like the later 85/115/145mph version with the odometer on the bottom.JamesC do you remember if the one Classic Industries sold look like this one or did it have the trip odometer/odometer placed like the '85 and later speedomete?

The one in the link is like the one I have. The GM part number for it is 25052189(it's no longer a good part number).I included a picture of the cluster in my 83 Z28.

Re: Tach with Z28 logo

I would've posted about that speedo, but the original post said "tach," which I wasn't sure about.

I put one of those speedos in my '83 HO back in '83/'84-ish. It was available, both on the aftermarket and through the dealers' parts departments.

I ordered mine from the dealer where they could label the order as 'car inoperative'(or something like that) so they could get it in the next day for me... no waiting a couple of weeks(or more) for shipping. And by going through the dealer, there were no shipping charges either.

It'll be an 'identifying characteristic' in the one-in-a-million chance that old car should ever turn-up somewhere. So hopefully, if it's still floating around out there with a fake VIN, the 'owner' isn't a member here and sees this, lol.

Yes, it did. I recall that the plastic lense face was sold separately to accomodate the trip ****.

Re: Tach with Z28 logo

I have one of those speedo's with the Z-28 logo that came out of a 84 wrecked Z-28. I took it to a GM certified repair company that checked it out and set the odometer to match the mileage of my original 85mph speedo. I have a 82 Z-28 that I put it in. I lucked out and found the entire instrument cluster from that 84 car at my local salvage yard and only paid 40.00 for the whole cluster. I used the speedo and tach and kept the others for spares. I really like the way it looks.

Re: Tach with Z28 logo

Thank you JamesC I was wondering about it as you had mentioned Classic Industries had them at one time.Do you remember if they had 5 or 6 digit odometers(I apologize for being a pest - just curious)?

And DJP87Z28 having a silkscreen done is a good idea. The ones that were recently on Ebay were for the speedometer only(I don't remember if the clear lens covers was included).

LAFireboyd it's funny you mention you had ordered one new for your '83.I won mine off Ebay a couple years ago from someone that had bought it for his '83.Then his Z28 was sadly totaled shortly afterward and he never got a chance to install it(I got a set of never used Z28 logo mats and front bra from him also).

Cc 82Z-28 I didn't think of doing that.Best I did was take pictures with my digital camera when I did the swap. It's nice to have the correct gauge faces in my '83(took the driver board off a later tach to repair mine).

Re: Tach with Z28 logo

Thank you JamesC for your patience. It's interesting Chevy designed the dual needle 85mph speedometer to comply with Goverment regulations.Only to release a replacement,or service unit, single needle that went to 140mph.I wonder if the Z28s that actually paced the '82 Indy 500 used this type of speedometer.Does anyone have a picture of one of the actual Pacecars?
