Also, wouldn't it have been worth more in unrestored condition, exactly as it looked when it was retired by GM?

"....Again, the concept failed to advance after 1985 and this particular car was stored at GM for 13 years until local Pontiac dealer and collector John McMullen was able to acquire it. Generally, experimental cars go the crusher when their use is over, but this one, by the good graces of Pontiac, escaped.
The car has been professionally restored in meticulous detail by Scott Tiemann of Supercar Specialities, Portland, Mich. The pure white exterior is graced by dove gray leather interior trim, and even the floor pan bottoms of the undercarriage are painted white. This 1985 Trans Am is judged to be in new-car showroom condition throughout – paint, interior and engine compartment. Because it has an “EX” coded VIN, this Trans Am may not be titled or driven in most states and is being sold here on bill of sale only...."

There is also a black one, and a GTA Kamback as well that is red that goes around on a tour at times.

saw the '81 "bandit"... I thought it was a little high for that car. I mean, it's got a 4.9 301 motor. Not very desirable by any means. And it's not even a Bandit car. It's a special edition TA and Bandit was a '77 anyway. I hate how people try to group a certain car with a famous one, sort of like the '85 Black and Gold Knight Rider edition Recaro.

Hey, This guy also auctioned off a 79 Kammback for $154K at the same auction !! It really doesn't make it clear if this is an original or replica. Wouldn't it be unusual for 2 test mules to end up sold to the public ?

Re: 85 TA Kammback sells for66k
The way I read the write up it was a replica. The Reason for this, there was no the "Experimental" Tag on the Article like the 85 T/A Kammback.
When GM made the Type K's they probably used test mules.

I know that Pontiac played with several cars like this, Chevy hey did a Corvette based on the 70's body with a station wagon rear end. Pontiac then did a Firebird in the 70's, an 85 and also a 4th gen... all of which were really unattractive personally, but interesting nontheless.

I don't know how many 3rdGen cars were done from 1985 model Trans Ams.... the original one featured in Motor Trend was blue/silver with the grey interior; I don't recall it having a full leather interior.
The red "GTA" that Pontiac has is outfitted with the AS5 Recaro buckets in 1985/1986 two-tone tan/brown, and I don't believe that car's color has been changed because I've seen photos of it in storage during conversion that show the gold 16" N96 rims on it.
This white car makes the third one that I've ever seen, so who knows about its origins.... maybe somebody else has more info?
From some of the stuff I've heard over the years, Dave's right about the "contacts and money" comment....

its not that they are ugly, its just so different from a standard trans am. i think it takes away all its muscle car attitude, but that doesnt mean its ugly.
and lmao at the Gieco caveman thing, totally perfect!

Re: 85 TA Kammback sells for66k
At least for the third gen version of the Kamm-back, it's only a bolt on addition. This reminds me of that Nissan "Pulsar" (or whichever model it was) that had the removable/ interchangable hatch. One could change it into a wagon, or a "sport coupe" etc.
While I too question it's asthetics, there is a side of practicality to this. This allows the one car owner to have their cake and eat it too (have a sports car along with some utility).
what gets me is how much someone would pay for this particular car. Without some kind of documentation, to me, it's way over priced. Even with documentation I still wouldn't want to shell out this kind of money for this.
I hope it's genuine for the owner's sake.
