Re: classic plate advantages
Im not sure about PA, but here in Illinios if you put antique plates on a car, it limits the amount of miles you can drive in a year. It also allows you to put a vehicle year plate on the car. (i.e. on my 64 impala i can put 1964 illinios plates on my car without problems) A benefit though in IL is the cost, its 30 dollars for 5 years. instead of the 78 every year for plates.

Here in wisconsin the collector's plates are 160 bucks but you never have to pay again for them. After 3 years you start saving money. It limits the months you can drive the car though, but I'd never take it out in the winter anyway.

But overall, atleast in WI it's the best deal you can get. 1 time payment, and atleast for my hobbyist plates, only 1 time for emissions.

Re: classic plate advantages
In MI there are 3 types of plates...
1) The normal plate
2) The Classic car plate - You can drive your car to shows, parades, to have work done on it, etc... pretty limited. The plate is good for something like 5 or 10 years and is only $35 or so to register each billing period of 5 to 10 years.
3) Original Year plates - These plates are the Whip, you register them ONE time, you can paint them ANY color, you have a little more leaway for where you can drive it, but not much more (not like you cant find a car show somewhere every day of the summer in MI) And its a ONE TIME FEE of $30 or $35, and you never have to pay again, its permanent...

Re: classic plate advantages
I was interested in saving some money, and called my local Treasurers office, here in KANSAS. In my state and county, they also have (at least) 3 plates of this type. 1. Normal. 2. Antique - which only costs a 1 time $40 fee, BUT which must be at least 35 years old, (my 91 is only about 16 years old), and 3. Original Year plates, for another extra fee.
Also, since my state requires proof of ins. before giving out a plate, (as I assume most states do), I was also considering getting a NON-Highway title until mine's running. (Which doesn't require ins., saving me $20-$60 / mo.) I just bought a GTA with a bad motor, and didn't know yet whether I'd keep it, and if so, whether I'd insure and register it right away, or wait a few weeks or months until I put in a new motor, OR store it in the garage for several years. I'm beginning to shy away from that longterm option, as the parts will only keep getting rarer and more expensive, and in it's fair shape, it would be a good daily driver without worrying about scratches and parking lot dings too much, or theft. Besides, cars are meant to be driven, and unless you have a rare, low mileage or pristine condition car, there's not much fun or money in storing it.
My state (KS) has this info online, with the specific statutes, which I just read, but you need to be a fricken lawyer to understand everything!

Re: classic plate advantages
Florida has only the antique plates where your car has to be 30+. They use to have one for collector cars that are 20+ which is awesome since my IROC is 20 this year. But they did away with it in 1999. So I will have to wait till 30 to get the antique tag. I was really hoping to get the collectors tag tough. Adam :-)

In PA
Classic tags are $75 for life still have to have safety inspection but exempts from emissions. Not for everyday driving. Once a week supposedly, but who would know, 15 yrs or older. Needs pictures of outside of car (4)
Antique Tags dont know how much, no emissions or safety inspections, can only be drove daylight to dusk. 25 yrs or older
I wish Pa would get the choice of year tags but they haven't changed too much in 15 yrs.
When the T/A gets back on the road I'm getting the classic tags Full coverage on $10,000 worth of car is only like $150 a year. I'm only going to drive on the weekends anyway.

Re: classic plate advantages
Does any on this board from Ohio have historical plates on their third gen? My car is eligible this year and was think thinking of going this route (no inspection biggest deciding factor)
In this form : http://bmv.ohio.gov/pdf_forms/bmv4806.pdf it says not for general transportation etc., my question is how strictly is this enforced here in Ohio. I might take my car out once a week in summer, am I going to have problems with johnny law?

Re: classic plate advantages
I think theres more to it than just that. I think there are mileage limits and etc if you do register a car in NJ like that. I've been looking at doing that and was told by Insurance and friends that you are limited to 2500 miles a year obviously I am going to drive my TA more than 2500 miles a year. Don't know if NJ has year plates though I don't think it makes a difference in limitations.

Ive been thinking about switching to a Collector Plate, because you can modify the engine/body/interior but does anyone know if there is any other differences besides the ability to modify the car?

Re: classic plate advantages
Yup I run Classic Plates on my 86'. The car has to appear stock (Thats why you have to send in 4 pics) but they must not pay too much attention, because according to my VIN the car is a Firebird S/E but my car has the Hood, Front/Rear Bumper, & GFX to make it a Trans Am. I payed $75, and will never have to pay again. Your supposed to only drive to Car Shows, Cruises, etc and Once a week for recreational driving, but honestly I have never been stopped and my car is a DD. The cop would have to have proof he saw you twice in one week, and who is to say one or both of those days you went to a car related event.

Re: classic plate advantages
If you have classic plates you should get classic car insurance.
At the time of checking my 80 wagon could get $5000 stated value insurance for like $130 [at the time it was the only thing I owned old enough to quote check] from a place called Hagarty [bad spel?]
Though its as limited as the plate rules or more, usually has to be garage kept. Some want pics.
Though your a fool to not also keep regular insurance on it too incase you get caught driving when you shouldn't and have a goof. Then your also doubled covered in a goof.
Just be honest about it if you need to file, try to get double pay out from both will just end up costing you your self respect bent over for bubba in jail.

Re: classic plate advantages
When I put a classic plate on my car, should my insurance go down? Packmule says that it will only cost him about $150 dollars a year for full coverage. Hell, I pay a lot more than that right now and I don't even have full coverage and my camaro sits in the garage from October to May. I think I put about 700 miles on it last year. If you don't mind me asking, how much do you pay?
I pay about $250 a year, but Im 18.

Insurance has no bearing on your Plates. At least it does not here in MI. If you get a stated value or an estimate that is different for the insurance.

Thanks for the response 1982TA. For the amount that I drive my camaro I think the historical plates should work out fine.
