well there were 26 Yellow Firebirds made in 1992. I am not sure if that was Yellow Formulas or Yellow Firebirds (total).

Here are a few yellow pix for you:

The first was in Newago, MI, it was for sale close to someone I know there.

The second is a pic of the FIRST 92 Firebird off of the line, it is a 1LE to boot. It is owned by GM, never titled.

The third is from the same show different car.

I have seen pix of a Yellow Formlula 350 T-top car as well... Black wheels really set it off... Of course I am partial to yellow.

Thanks John, I like the GM owned one, where is it stored? Notice they did not put bumper guard rail along doors. The last is excellent, but the license plate killed the front nose now with the holes in it.

I can't save and post the 2 I found on webshots, my work computer is acting up and sooo slow! Hopefully it will pop up for sale oneday on eBay or trader online or here on the classifieds. Andy

John, I would guess that it was probably 26 Yellow Formulas built that year. I have seen a handful of Yellow 92 Birds in person, enough to make me believe that the 26 number would apply to the Formulas. I have seen Base birds, T/A's and GTA's as well.

John, thanks for the pics. I was looking for that second one owned by GM for a while now. Nice to finally have that pic.

I must say, I love Yellow 92's. I know that a Yellow '92 'Vert TA that is supposedly 1 of 2 is local to my area, I have seen it out a few times and man that is a good looking car.

Here's one I got that's a '91 1LE TA. From what I understand, GM never intended to release this car, but someone "snuck" it out. Anyone heard of this?

RPM, I'm not John.... but I can comment on some of these photos you posted.

The yellow T/A you posted above: that photo was taken at Dayton at the T/A Nationals. I don't know who shot it, but that's the back parking/wash area of the Airport Hotel. I believe that car is/was owned by Leo Montiel and was, in fact, a 1-of-9 produced 1992 1LE T/A. John....? I know the Jamaica Yellow was a 1992-only color. The only other years that any Yellow was offered was 1987-1988, and I'm not sure if the Formula was available in that color for '88. John will know.

The 1LE '92 Yellow Formula John speaks of and shows above is still part of the Pontiac Historic Collection.... but just barely. The last time I was at a show with Jim Mattison in attendance (NCM '02) he told me that particular car had been slated for destruction by GM during one of their "collection cleanings" a few years prior. He personally took the car to his home and stored it away under a cover for a period of several months until the beancounters had pared the number of cars they were "required" to get rid of. Then he took it back to Pontiac and went on a crusade to make sure it was preserved.... apparently so far, so good.

He also was kind enough to "store" the '92 blue twin-turbo experimental T/A on more than one occassion as well so that we enthusiasts could continue to be awed by it as well.

Yellow was an available color from 1985 thru early 1988 and then again in 1992. The yellow in 1985 was unique, as was the yellow in 1992. The yellow used between 1986 & 1988 was the same color code. Interestingly the yellow in 1986 was a Trans Am color only and then in 1987 & 1988 it was a Formula only color. In 1988 the Orange Metallic replaced the color mid year, or the yellow was dropped altogether. I have seen a few Yellow 88 Formulas.

I have seen that 1LE TA car at the TA nats myself, he wnated a top dollar a few years ago and now it does not sound like a bad deal.

I actually told Jim that if they ever sold the Yellow 1LE I would be intersted, he was emphatic that they would not be doing that any time soon.

I do not know the actual number of Yellow cars made in 1992. From just in my area, there was a base firebird, and a Trans Am convertible with a black top IIRC. I have not seen any other Yellow 92's in my area. Then there is the one over in Newaygo, one in Chicago, one owned by PHS, the Trans Am above, and numerous ones I have spotted online. I believe that there was 26 Yellow Formulas, but the way the information was presented I really do not know.

GM has their heads up their @sses when I see stuff like this. If they want to save a few bucks, donate the cars to a museum on the condition that they can't be driven on public roads to protect themselves from liabiltiy.

Here are some pics for a yellow 92 T/A vert that's on CarDomain:

There was also a guy, I believe on this board who owned a Yellow L98 1992 Formula with black GTA wheels. The car got totalled off I think in 2004 or so and parted it out. Maybe someone remembers it.

Leo still owns it (and it's just a tad faster than my 88 Formula ) He just recently moved from Va Beach VA to San Diego.
it's a 1LE 305TPI 5 speed with an aftermarket A/C setup in it.

Actually I thought the same thing, but I would suspect that most people have not seen the Yellow from 1992 as it was so uncommon. The Yellow in 86-88 faded badly from the factory. The original paint on my car was more of a manilla folder color by the time I got the car. I was going to use a canary yellow or a newer mustang or Corvette yellow but after I started tearing into the car I noticed that the color was really pretty nice, so I went with the original yellow.

I have a pic of the two yellows together, my car is in the forefront and the 92 is in the rear. But it gives you an idea of the difference in colors

Re: Just saw photo of '91-92 Yellow Formula

So what are the odds of that Newaygo Formula being the one I saw on I96, back in 1997? I tailed that guy with my own T/A for 30 miles, trying to get his attention, but he never got a clue as to what I was trying to do. I've wanted a Jamaica Yellow '92 Formula ever since. ...Even thought of cloning one out of my '84.

Excellent thread, I knew Okfoz had the goods on his computer somewhere.

Re: Just saw photo of '91-92 Yellow Formula

Probably likely... Considering that there were only 26 made... Chances are there would be only one in Michigan... I know there are only 2 Formula 350 convertibles in MI, and there were 42 of those made, Funny thing was that they both moved to MI within a month of each other.

Personally I think Ed Hamburger got it WRONG, he should have made the Firehawks all Yellow, not red in 91 & 92. That way they would stick out like a sore thumb...
