HELP I need the following for 1983 Z28!!!!

Guys I am looking for an original Freedom Plus II battery for a 1983 Z28, I doesn't have to work it only has to be a casing for that matter. Also I need an original OEM oil filter for the same car. These two items cost me 14 points off my car this year at Carlisle. I only lost 19 the other 5 were on engine detail. I didn't do an type of paint work under the hood because the car is unrestored with 6900 miles on it. If you have these I would like to purchase them OR if you have pictures of these items I need to see them so I know what I am looking for when I find it. The search continues.....If you have either of these items CALL ME! 540 664 9273

I'm certainly no car judge, but isn't it ok if you have genuine GM replacement parts aka a current production Delco group 75 battery and a current delco oil filter?

I would think so but no they marked off for it this past year. I am not even sure what the 83 version of this battery looked like nor am I sure of the color of the OEM filters. If they are white or blue they can be found, if they wre black...I probably won't find one.

If I remember correctly on the early '80's Freedom ll battery the case was white with a blue top and obviously had the monitor in the top.On the oil filter I don't recall but I think you're right in thinking they were black.

Edit:On the battery look in the Haynes '82-'92 camaro service manual on page 1-7 for a picture of the battery(it's black/white photo but i still believe the top is blue with the white bottom).Hope this helps.

But I'm with cdartz as long as you use correct GM replacement parts you would think it would pass.I guess it depends on what class you've entered for judging. And when you think about it they gig you for not using the correct hose clamps and even date coded hoses(even down to the correct stripe color on the vacuum hoses).

I must say both your Z's are beauties. And only 6900 miles on the '83 did you buy her new?My '83 has the same color interior as your's but beige over gold on the outside.

It's a tough class 1000 point judging....Everything else on the car is exactly correct. No I actually bought it fom the original owner who drove it VERY little and really took good care of it. It has never been driven in rain or snow. I just can't remember the color on the OEM oil filters I worked for GM 1988-1990 and have forgotten what they used off the line. The batteries changed by the timeI came along so I definetly don't remember that.

lol. I thought that was your car but I wasn't sure. It's def. the best looking early model Z28 i've ever seen. As for the colors of the battery and filter I'm not sure. I'll hunt the net for a while tonight. Good luck with the sale.

I decided if I didn't sale the first time through (aka I didn't get my price) I'm not going to sell it. I was just really curious to see how far it would go. It got close but not close enough to generate more than a yawn out of me. All of us here know that eventually our day will come too. The 82's officially become antiques - (damn thats awful to say - makes me feel old) - on January 1 and also the early 3rd gen cars will be eligible for AACA competition soon too. I really like the car but I am not in love with it if that makes sense, but if I am going to have it and compete on a national level with it I want it to be right. Therefore I have got to try to find out what I need to improve the car to its max potential. As explained in the first posting they dinged me 4 points on original battery and 10 yes 10 on original oil filter, I lost 5 other points because I had not detailed out the engine - that's being taken care of this winter in addition to giving the undercarriage bare metal items the once over. It is my plan to improve the score this year dramaticaly before entering AACA competition in 2008. My 81 on the otherhand is my hotrod, driver local show, beating down the road, national terrorism car. SO the 83 gets to be the queen what's not to love. You know and I know the value of the 83 is in it's low mileage.

You should be allowed to get away with replacements. Tires would be a safety issue today if the car still has the original tires. The same for the battery and oil filter. If they aren't available, you can't have them on the car. My car has scored 996/1000 at more than 1 show and I have a delco battery and delco oil filter. Definately not the originals. I also replaced the tires with the same size tire, but not GoodYear. Replacements should be acceptable.

I agree with what you are saying and I am checking into that, but as explined to me at the show this year they are looking for the originals. I have contacted Karl to ask him about this and will find out an answer and put it in here. I do have the original tires on but because the car is always trailered it isn't a problem, if I were driving it everywhere, no way would run the original tires. Have you competed at the Camaro Nationals at Carlisle???

No. I've wanted to, but travel with the car to get there isn't easy. It was on my radar for 2007, but then Chevrolet decided to throw a 40th anniversary party for the Camaro and the 50th anniversary party for the 57 Chevy in August in Detroit! I will be trailering my car to Detroit for that. I might have to stay a few extra days to cruise with the Woodward Dream Cruise.

Well so far this is what I've found on the oil filter and battery.
If your'e using the PF25,which is superseded by PF454,I found a couple pictures of them. The older filters were white. And one of the filters on Ebay item #280005806424 looks to be dark blue.
On the Freedom ll battery I'm still certain they had blue tops with white cases. In the Haynes '82-'92 service manual it shows a couple black&white pictures of the battery on pages 1-7 and 1-9.Also I found a replica Freedom battery(it's really a decanter) on Ebay but i forgot to write the item number down.
Hope this info helps.

Beautiful 83 black Z! I have just bought an 84 all original 64000. I would love to think that it would one day look like yours. It too has been garage kept and never driven in the rain, actually i'm told that it was only driven at night one time. I can believe it, it's extremely clean and completely in tact.

I know what I paid for it and I'm mighty darn sure that it's worth much more. I've got it insured now but can't determine what it's worth. Is there a good web based appraisal system for old Z'z?

Again, NICE Black Z28

I got the oil filter. the battery is next it as a Black Top not red or blue.

I don't know of any online places if you were close here, I could give you an actual insurance appraisal. But since you are not, I would insure it for no less than about 15,000 then at least if something happened you are covered. Agreed Value Insurance is great.

Put a sticker on another battery????? It's kind of hard to do that since Delco doesn't make a white case battery any more. Yes there were two options regular and HD batteries

I FOUND THE BATTERY!!!!!!!!! Guys you wouldn't believe where I found this thing at. I was actually out at the local landfill taking a load of trash the day before Christmas and happened to notice the battery pallet as I drove by. On it was a white cased battery so I stopped to investigate only to find it was an import battery. As I turned to walk away I saw the black top Delco Freedom II setting on the back part of the pallet lifted it up to discover it had the white casing as well. I asked the guy at the dump if I could have it he said "I didn't see anything" so I took it home. Got it here ran the date code only to discover it had been manufactured only two weeks before my car was built in Sept '82, contacted the original owner and asked him if he remembered the series he confirmed that his was the exact battery I had been looking for. Thanx to everyone for all you help, Santa Claus came early this year!!!!!
