Formula 350 with T-top???

Well, I had a little scuffle with this one guy the other week about no Formula models with the TPI 350 were T-tops... He says that it doesnt matter, a T-top Formula could have the TPI 350... I disagreed... I think I read somewhere that all Formula 350's were ALL Hardtop, is this correct?? And if so, why??

You could get a Formula L98 (350) with T-tops.

EDIT: Here you go... https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/hist...ight=350+T-top

Why is it all the option list for the Formula models with the L98 option require the T-top delete.... CC1 ??? Or was I misreading something

Sorry it's so long, but here is a list of options for a 92, 87-91 is the same for the engines... Notice it says for the L98 "cannot include CC1"

A also say this because I have never seen a Formula T-Top car with the L98 engine... I've seen quite a few and there a over 20 Formula's i've seen in my area, all with T-Tops are either the LB9 or LO3

EDIT, Alright, I read the thread... So there are few and far between I take it

ive seen two 91/92 formula 350s with t-tops. iirc they were the only 91/92 L98 car to get away with t-tops for some reason.

Ummm...errr... well, not exactly. The L98 convertibles (ASC converted cars) were not blessed by GM with a convertible VIN number. So, yes there were L98 convertibles made by the same people that brought you the LB9 convertible, but the VIN wont tell you that.

Yes, the Formula was the only model in 91-92 that could get t-tops and the 350.

I would REALLY be interested in seeing your SPID sheet as I have never seen an ACTUAL 87, 88 or 90 Formula 350 with t-tops

As for FOrmula 350's & T-tops U have one, its an 89, actually its an ASC convertible...

The biggest reason why Pontiac did not offer T-tops on the GTA & Trans Am in 1987 & 1988 was mostly due to the fact that it would have lowered the fuel efficiency and the cars would have been classified as a "Gas Guzzler" therefore instead of paying $995 for T-tops you would have paid $1995 for that same option, so they did not make it readily available until 1989 when they updated the injectors, intake and some minor refinements to the program to allow for better fuel efficency... In 1990 this went away because of the new computer design...

As for ASC not being blessed by GM & ponitac... I suspect that Pontiac wanted a convertible from 87-90, it would have been a huge disadvantage for them by not offering a convertible... THe problem again comes back to the fuel efficency of the car, because the Vert was heavier than the regular hard top cars, and the lack of aero, this would have placed the cars into a different Gass Guzzler bracket and again the consumer would have spent an extra premium to buy the cars, it was not feasable... To get around this they allowed ASC to let dealers convert cars AFTER the production process.. Fortunately this process was identical to the ones the Camaros had BUT it was not classified as a Convertible on the VIN. This way Pontiac could offer a convertible under the table...

BTW, I get 25 mpg highway in my vert with the top up

John
