How do you title an abandoned car?
(wasn't sure where to put this thread, if in wrong place I apologize)
I found this sweet firebird engrossed with bushes at a farm in illinois. Owner of the land says its been there for a few months and theres no registration in the glove and the plates are expired.
The engine is in beutiful shape. V8 carb 5.0. Its just like my car right now only it actually has LESS rust and body decay
Is there any way I can go about titling and getting this car?

Car: Looking
1st- Talk to your local police to find out what the rules are exactly on abandoned cars. Have the VIN ran to make sure shes not stolen.
2nd- Most likely, you'll have to do a title search or title recovery of some sort. The police may be able to help you with that.

I didn't get a title for my GTA and what I ended up doing was taking the VIN to the courthouse, they ran the number and gave me the last registered owner of the car. I sent a certified letter to him stating I had bought the car and intended on titling it in my name. I got the letter back as nobody lives here. Was told by the county clerk to have a policeman verify the VIN and write a little statement saying I was in possession of the car. Went back to the courthouse with a bill of sale from the guy I bought the car from, and the letter I got back, paid my sales tax on the car and registration/tag swap from my wrecked Firebird, they sent all appropriate paperwork to the capital and about 12 weeks later, I got my title in the mail. And a clean title at that.

I have gotten many very good cars for free. In AZ to file for an abandoned title, all you do is call the state, they send somebody out to inspect the car, a letter is mailed to the last registered owner and if nobody replies within 30 days...the car is yours. It costed me $30 to put the paperwork through, and $4 to transfer the title. Thats in AZ though.

in IL youll have to bond it for three years for half the fair value
it sux
thats if theyll even let you have the car being that theres no title
so do a title history and search on it and if nothing comes up then that means its been untouched ofr at least 7 years
7 years is the time period in IL on title and registration info
it will ocme back as no info found
then you go to the county police and have them run the vin code and if its not stolen or anything then you should be able to bond it, have to go to a judge
its no fun
and the DMV wil be of no help to you at all, no point in contacting them, they will say you cannot do anything without a title
youll have to go with county police and a judge to do anything
sounds like it works pretty closely to the same as in AZ, as it does here in IL
remember each state is different,
some states dont even use titles,
and some notarize like wyoming, etc,
and some use bills of sale, but not IL
good luck

Well since its on someones property they will have to do all the work. you can do it for them but they have to sign everything.

I had the plates run by a cop I've known for a long time. Its not stolen and the plates are expired with several notices sent. Thats all he was allowed to tell me and he said theres no indication that the notices were recieved. Then he mentioned something along the lines to what Fast 68 said about having to get a bond.
The bond thing is going to suk if thats the case. But county courthouse/police isn't that far away so I will have to talk to them.
I'll run the VIN and go from there it seems, maybe even get the car without the hassle with the state.
I appreciate the advice!

why not plate it in a friendly state? Get a relative in another state to run it back into the system, then bring the "good" title back into IL, the clean way.
just a thought
