DD8? autodim mirror???
What is RPO code DD8?
DD8 -- Mirror, Inside Automatic Rearview -- 5
According to GTA sourcepage, there were only (5) '88 GTA's with this option. If this is the option code for autodim mirror, this means my fiance's car isn't supposed to have it and I won;t feel bad about swapping to a standard lighted rearview mirror,
thanks

If you want to dump the autodim mirror, I'll take it off your hands, my '87 has the wiring for the autodim, but the mirror was gone when I got the car.
However

Many times if they would g bqad under warrenty they would replace them with a liquid crystal rear view mirror which worked much better.
Actually you can usually pick them up in junkyards for around $15, 90 + rivieras had them for sure, so did many cadillacs, and the Toronado/Aurora cars did too.
If you get one with lights on the bottom you will pay more.

Okfoz,GM offered the autodim mirror with the map lights in the early '90s?I've never seen one actually in a car just in magazine ads in the last 5-8 years.Have to remember to look when I make a trip to the J-yard.I agree the liquid crystal works much better, quieter since no moving parts.I have a mechanical autodim but no harness so I don't know if it works.I've ran across a thread on here how to repair them but I don't remeber how old it was,and until the search works it just takes a little time to find it.

the are easy to wire up, 3 wires from the factory, power, reverse signal, and ground. I didn't hook up the wire that is supposed to go to my back-up switch(manual tranny), I don't think that would make a difference in it working or not. Any thoughts on that?

The wire that goes to the neutral safety switch,or reverse light switch on manuals,un-dims(?)or turns off the mirror(liquid crystal)for safety when backing up.It comes down to personal preference and how good you are at checking behind you backing up.I don't want that to sound being smart but some people don't really look.GM(all companies and accessory vendors)did/do this for safety/liability reasons.

The autodim mirror was only offered in 86 and 87. At least for Camaro. I've never seen one that worked properly, but there must be some out there. So good luck!

The parts & Illustration catalogs for Firebird state that the electric mirror DD8 was used in 86 & 87. Apparently there are differences for each of the years as they have different part numbers: 12515171 -86 & 123415170 - 87.
In 1984 there was a auto dimming mirror, but it does not show a unique RPO, it may have been in a package 12341282 - 84.
There is also a reference to an electronic mirror from 87-92 with part number 12341194.
Chances are these part numbers are for Electro Chromatic mirrors, as the mechanical mirror was discontinued in the late 80's, and the original part numbers were no longer used by the time the catalogs were made...
