There is a recall. Even if they say the service has been performed if your filler neck is leaking you may have to be a little forceful. I have a 92 Z/28 that this was supposedly taken care of back in 1994. They gave me the run around until they actually looked at it. My car is in the dealership as we speak and I was told that GM is going to pick-up the bill. Go straight to the service manager and be nice & don't take no for a answer. You will probably have to call Chevrolet and get a area service rep involved just remember don't make anyone mad our cars are over 10 years old.

mrfast4u,

I went a few months ago when I got my 92 z and they said there was no recall. Maybe I do have to be a little more forceful.

Every once in awhile after driveing, I smell a little gas fumes from under the car, did yours smell like this before you took it in.

Any help would be appreciated.

Manny

What year did the recall start in?

I WOULD RATHER PUSH A CAMARO THAN DRIVE AN IMPORT

1983Z28 350w/ edelbrock performer RPM power package , dynomax shorty headers, 700R-4 with shift kit, 750cfm carb, edelbrock 3" exhaust system, 16" IROC rims and ASCD SS hood.

future mods:
completely done over suspension, black paint with flames,
T-56 almost ready to go in, TPI swap coming up

Wifes new car:

95Z28, AT, leather, T-tops bone stock for now.

future mods:
header to tailpipe replacement and a cold air intake. Then I am just going to leave it alone

Ok here is the info
go to www.nhsta.dot.gov
This is National Highway Transportation Safety Association

The fuel tank recall is
NHTSA Campaign ID Number: 94V077000

or if you have MSN CarPoint just follow the links to the recall page for any vehicle you have.

The recall says that the dealers are to inspcet for signs of cracks or pin holes.

Well this was in June of 94, I would guess alot of cars were inspected and signed off on only to develop leaks later. The Chevy dealership took this into consideration and are going to work with the rep to get it paid for. Believe me I got a the run around on this. But the good side is a read somewhere that GM only sales the 1LE tank as a replacement now so maybe I will get the better tank for nothing!

If they won't look at it then threaten to call the NHTSB. That will get some attention. I did that when I called Pontiac and they called the dealer and told them to fix it.

RODS92Z,
If you have presure in your tank,it's O.K. only when it's leaking, it won't have any presure at all!
My '88 Formula 350 leaks only with the tank completely filled,so I never top it up these days.
The recall is only for '89 cars and up...
GM lets me down!!!!

Mine stinks like crazy when it's hot out and the tank gets down low. There is a ton of pressure in the tank, though, so it can't be leaking. I dunno what else is the problem. Recall has "been taken care of" twice on the car and yet the stink has never gone away.

While my car was at a dealership for a mechanical failure out of state, I had them check for the recall. Within a couple of days, I was on the road with a new tank at no cost to me. The bill to GM was close to $450. Better them than me...

I picked up my Z/28 (nw gas tank)last night from the dealership. No more stink thank ***.

Someone suggested threatening to call NSTBA if Chevy or Pontiac try to give you the run around, you probably will have to do this I did anyway.

Now I have got to decide what to do - Sell it, Drive it or Mod it. I bought this car to fix it up and make a few bucks but I sure do enjoy driving it, just wish it was faster.

I've actually have had my gas filler neck fixed TWICE! Once back in the early 90s when the recall/campaign was first issued and last year, when I had my fuel pump replaced. The dealership said that my gas filler neck was showing signs of leakage and had it fixed for a second time.

As I understand, this recall/campaign is only for certain years (and possibly models), not all cars are covered.
