Need to identify my 1990 GTA CLONE car I would apprecieate any info on how to decode it as either a formula or trans am, I thought it was a gta until I recent found that the rear brakes were drum so I realized it was not the real deal..Car is a 5 spd tuned port 5.0..Has performance suspension badge on the dash..Any help would be appreciated..Thanks

Car: 1987 Pontiac Trans Am
Engine: 305 LB9 Tuned Port Injection
Transmission: 700-R4 Automatic
Axle/Gears: Saginaw 10 bolt 2.73 posi
To identify a Trans Am or a Formula- just read the VIN.
The first five digits should read for a 1990:
Trans Am- 1G2FW (W for Trans Am)
Formula- 1G2FS (S for base Firebird/Formula)
Hope this helps. I am not sure if the GTA package (an add-on to the Trans Am) had a specific RPO code or not. Someone on this board will know that for sure.

Car: 87 Formula T-Top, 87 Formula HT

The GTA did have its own specific RPO, Y84 IIRC.
Like stated above, the 5th digit will tell you if its a Formula or Trans AM. THe GTA got the same VIN as a T/A, and therefore would be indistinguishable by the VIN.
- First you have a Base Firebird No ground effects, base Spoiler
- The Firebird in 1989 & 1990 could have been purchased with the same ground effects as the Trans Am, however the Firebird did not get the T/A hood or the Aero Spoiler
- The Formula added the Buldge hood and the Aero Spoiler, The FOrmula was NOT available with ground effects from 87-92 from the factory
- The Trans AM added Ground effects, Aero Spoiler, and vented Hood, and Vented fromt fenders from 1982-1990
- The GTA was basically the same as the T/A except they never got the Fender Vents, and were ALWAYS monochromatic, never duo-tone like the Trans Am.

www.gtasourcepage.com <-- this page has a lot of usefull info on determining weather your car is the real deal or not.
out of 884 GTAs in 1990, only 673 came with disc. 32 had steele drums, 179 had alluminum drums. your car may still be a GTA. RPO breakdown on brakes:
J41 -- Brake System, Power FR Disc, RR Drum -- 32
J42 -- Brake System, Aluminum Drum -- 179
J65 -- Brakes, Power FR and RR Disc -- 673
in 1990 ALL GTAs had a power antrennae, front airbag, reading lights on the reaer view mirror, posi traction , and lastly ALL were built at van nuys.
i saw a red "GTA" at the portland airport the other day, no powere antenna, base interior (no leather, no "GTA" logo on wheel, or spiffy radio control wheel) and fender vents.. i was like "i wonder if that guy knows his GTA is a fake?" but i fuigure since he had an "enki" sticker above the fender vent and a "car bra" that he did not care about his car.
