Why can't I find the correct paint for my car
Does anyone else have WA 9636 for their car? I'm having the hardest time finding paint for my car. Some think its medium gray, others say its gunmetal. I tell them to shove it and give me the correct paint not what they think it is.
I have bought it before but the place I normally go to doesn't have it anymore. The last can I got says gunmetal but its specific to the paint code unlike the other gunmetal shades.
Any one know of a place in the Pa area, or anywhere that will ship it to my house where that paint is available?
Thanks in advance
Phil

Bring the paint code to any auto parts store that can mix paint, or to any body shop that mixes paint and you'll have your color.
Your paint code should be a 3 digit code.

Oops my bad. I was so pissed off, that I did type it wrong. It is wa 9536 which is a shade of gray. The auto paint store no longer has the cross reference with the paint code so I can't get it mixed. Its the only one in the area I live in that can do it.
Anyone have the correct mixture for the color? Then I can take it to them and see how it comes out.

Thank you everyone for your help. At least I know what color I want and that this code exists.
Next question, any other Camaro owners with that WA # in there RPO sheet? I mean, the Camaro White Book I have only lists Medium Gray as a color and not Gunmetal. I always thought its was only a color on Firebirds only.

Interresting. I always thought the paint codes were 3 digit codes.
Guess I'll have to go consult the old white book.

I believe 85 or 86 and below is a 3 digit WA. Anything afterward is a 4 digit. I remember doing a lot of cross referencing and I saw in either 85 or 86 the way paint codes were made changed.

I don't remember the exact year they changed but I remember glancing through the GM book and it says such a year and below and then such a year-present

So were there two grays in '89, or is Gunmetal the same as Medium?? My window sticker says Medium...

I take it that the lower paint code doesn't refer to the color of the ground effects? My upper and lower paint codes are the same, but my gfx are dark grey.

Medium gray is darker than Gunmetal as I just found out. I had to paint my spoiler in Medium Gray and its darker than my gunmetal paintjob.

My entire cowl tag is:

15L 15U WATER

There are no WWx codes on the RPO sticker.

If Medium Gray is darker, then here is something interesting...
My car was dealer-repainted in 1990 under factory warranty, due to the typical GM clearcoat peel, and there was a HAIR stuck in the hood from the factory...
Anyways, when it came back, it was notably darker than before! You can see the masking lip on the inside of the doorjambs...the new paint is noticeably darker than the factory job. I always assumed the dealer mixed it wrong, or they used the wrong GM gray...
Not to start a fight, but is it possible Gunmetal Gray was darker? I ask solely because mine was Medium, was repainted by a dealer, and came out darker. The only reason I really even care is because when I repaint it next Spring (the dealer clearcoat is peeling in a few spots, and I'm a perfectionist ), I WANT the darker color...my mom and dad thought it looked great when it came back, and I have seen other gray F bodies, and always liked mine better!
If anyone has any idea, let me know...

medium gray paint can differ up to 10 shades. To be called med. gray, it can be 5 shades darker or lighter if it is to replace factory spec paint.
Trust me gunmetal is lighter. I have a couple of empty cans of paint from earlier painting I did to the car. Its the same WA as on my RPO. I was looking for about 12 ounces to paint my spoiler but I had to settle with med. gray which came out a lot darker than the gunmetal, both the factory paint still on it and what I did.
If you looking for a dark gray, don't really look at F-body cars for that. They only had 2 grays and aparently gunmetal is exceptionally unusual.
