3rd brake light question

Does anyone know a good place for me to get the 3rd brake light housing (the one that fits into the rear spoiler) for a 87-92 vert.? Dealer wants $142, you gotta be kidding me! Also, I found a used one of an 87 coupe that looks the same, anyone know if it is exactly the same? Was not careful when changing the bulbs and a couple broke off with the mounts...crap.

Thanks in advance...Alex

I'm pretty sure they're the same but I don't feel like tearing into my convertible to find out. If they aren't the same let me know, I've got a line on a burned up 91-92RS vertible, but the brake lights fine.

Ask the dealer to check the part # for both years. Just a thought

Drew,

Still working on finding out if they are the same, but would be very interested in the one off the 91-92 vert. if I can get it for a reasonable price.

Thanks...Alex

I doubt a reasonable price could be achieved. However there is one there for parts. If you NEED it I'm sure for the right price they'd sell it to you.

I believe the 87 3rd light is unique. 88-92 should interchange.

The 87 light was a Ford Crown Vic station wagon piece.

I bought one of those damned 87 spoilers and need the ford part number for the brake light. I'm willing to put money on it that Willie knows the answer to this.

i think i have the light you need. i ordered the spoiler from a guy on ebay and i thought it would fit. it says on it 1987-90, but the light doesn't fit in my spoiler. it must be for 1987. let me know. i have an 1988 camaro coupe.

Post a pic or email it to me and a price and we'll see what we can do to work a deal. I have a coupe brake light I can give you but I need it on my car until I get the other one on first.

Yes the 88-92 'vert HMSL is the same as the coupe one. I have an 88 Iroc coupe and 90 RS 'vert. They are the same. You are lucky. This is one of the instances when the 'vert shares a part in common with the coupe. Now, the 'vert spoiler on the other hand. Good luck finding one! Lon

Lon found me mine, and I worked out the deal of the century for it. I wasn't aware that it was an 87 spoiler. Not that it would have mattered anyway for the price I got it.

Update...

I just checked with my local chevy dealer and the 3rd brake light (in the spoiler) part number from the 91'-92' vert. and 87' & 88-90' coupes is identical. BTW, if you want to measure yours, the size is 13 7/8" by 1 5/8", it's the long thin one with 5 bulbs inside.

'88-'92 'verts all match the coupes. You can check eBay for them or a Pick-A-Part as well. BTW, the bulbs are very cheap for these at Radio Shack. 12v, 20 watt halogen bi-pin.

okay, when I repainted my car I added a spoiler with the HMSL since my hatch had been replaced, how can I tell if it was the 87 or the 88-92 style? is it as easy as a visual check, or will I need to cross-check the part #?

Also, parts.com lists the convertible and regular HMSL with different prices, but they want 120 for the convertible one for a 92 and 79 for the regular.

Looks like I joined in too late on this one -- the question's already been answered. I will confirm it though.

The 1987 - 1990 coupe third brake light is identical to the 1988 - 1992 convertible unit.

So 89RagTopRS, do you have any plans for the '87 spoiler? As you know, I own an '87 ragtop and if you don't need it, I might take it off your hands.

It is true the 1987 convertible brake light is unique and has been long discontinued. It is originally a Ford part, but the lens was produced without the Ford oval logo for 1986 (customer owned conversions) & 1987 convertibles. FYI, the GM part number is 12390829.

I have it bolted on my car, and that is where it will stay. I just painted it and put it on and went to put in the brake light and it wasn't the same as the one in my coupe spoiler. So I put it in there anyway. Its looks really funny up close.
