rare or not on a 91 TA droptop

alrighty, i found in the Alabama Auto Trader, a 91 TA conv. for $10k with 60,000 miles.....in this area that is a good price,
its the 305/auto fully loaded bla bla bla,
the strange part is, it came factory with the firebird 15x7" rims and 2.73 gears
the dealer says its his friends car who won it from a radio station back in 91 after it had paced the Daytona 500.
the dealer says it had the D.500 stickers on the side, but were removed already

Does this sound legit? Was there a TA pacing the D500 that year? Tomorrow I will get him to fax me the RPOs to see all the options...any info is appreciated

I don't know about the 500 issue, but regardless, this car is RARE. If it somehow is the actual pace car, $10k is a steal.

Sounds like a base model bird to me. Good call on asking for the RPO's as they don't lie. You won't know exactly what you are looking at until you see the codes. Also, the Daytona bit is most certainly BS. The price seems pretty damn steep to me. Good luck. Read through the archives on any convertible specific posts to see what to look for as to worn parts specific to the verts as many parts are discontinued, and if they aren't, they are downright expensive to replace. As with any serious purchase, think it through, because unless you are getting a steal of a deal, a better deal will likely come down the road. Later.

The 305 auto with 2.73 and 15" rims is typical of an L03 base model vert. I am pretty sure that is what you will find it to be. And at that price, I would let him keep it. Just my opinion.

I have to side with 89RagTop on this, although it isn't common, its not worth that money. For that money, get a fourth gen T/A or something else.

No 305 could ever pace at Daytona except for maybe a go-cart race. Its most likely a stripped down model (convertibles have more bells and whistles to begin with) with an LO3 dog and 2.73 gears like mine. Nothing special or ever worth 10 grand.

its a TA, cuz it has a TPI on it, and im looking at the pic and it has the aero spoiler, TA hood, and emblems on it so thats a dead give away,
but im still sceptical about the 2.73's and 15" techno rims and it looks like it has the standard 215/65R15s on it....since I missed my opportunity to see it on the weekend, im goin tommorrow after work to check it out
ill let yall kno sumthin
Since it still has the factory window sticker, im gonna try to get a copy if i can, and im gonna get the RPOs and VIN

you're either a crackhead or blowing smoke... convertibles don't have aerospoilers. Also no 91 T/A had 15" wheels... Everything about the car as you've described it tells me someones spinning yarns... either you or the seller.

Sounds like a base Firebird convertible with an LO3. Think it was called "Sport Appearance Package" ... that bagged all the TA bodywork with either a V6 or the base V8.

The wheels were probably changed out at some point; all T/As and GTAs were 16" wheel cars. The converts had a specific soft-ride touring 16" tire of smaller section width.

No, it did not Pace the Daytona 500; that honor went to the Grand Prix GTP/B4U for several years.

The last F Car pace car before the 4thgen was in '86, so that guy's full of ca-ca.

It is possible that it could have been delivered to the speedway as a courtesy car; Pontiac has kept the speedway brass in "company cars" since the days of Bunkie, and believe me those guys "shore do 'preciate them Ponyacks". Could have had the stickers applied on the way, but unless someone has documentation, who cares?

A good car is a good car, but I'd say $10 for something that you're not sure about is a bad deal.

According to Firebird Red Book(Motorbooks Inter.) there were 555 TA Convertibles built in '91,a total of 4999 '91 TA's.But, according to Pontiac Historical Services there were a total of only of 4013 TA's built that year(sorry no seperate #'s for convertibles).Hoped you looked at the RPO's LH0 was the six banger,L03 was the TBI V8,LB9 5.0 TPI,B2L 5.7 TPI. or you could look at the 8th digit in the VIN code T is the V6,E the 5.0 TBI,F the5.0 TPI,or 8 for the 5.7 TPI. Good luck.
