1AY is a car ordered by a dealership for their stock. 1AZ is a customer ordered car.

My car reads 1AY as well. It is a '91 Z28 and I had a hard time figuring out that code too. I don't know why this would warrant it's own code. I guess you learn what the dealer liked to show off on the sales floor.

I know this is a sorta old post, but i'm trying to figure something out here, not sure if it has anything to do with this though...My car has 1AY as well, what does it mean if a car is ordered by the dealership for their stock?
Thanks

To clarify my original reply, there are only two ways a new car gets to a dealership.
The first is if the dealership orders it for their lot (RPO 1AY). These cars usually come with the most popular equipment, which would be most popular with the masses -- no unusual combinations of options (which would be harder to sell). My 1987 IROC-Z has 1AY -- sat on the lot until someone bought it.
The second is if you walked into the dealership and told them you don't want anything in their stock, that you want to order one exactly like you want it. This usually takes six to eight weeks for the dealership to get your car, then they call you. You buy it!!! This car would show RPO 1AZ. My 1987 Z28 convertible shows this code. I know for a fact that it was ordered by the original owner (whom I bought the car from) -- it never saw the lot.

Now what if a car has neither 1AY or 1AZ?

The dealership is listed on the build sheet. If you have a firebird PHS might have that info as well.
