California IROC?

California IROC?
Anyone ever hear of a "California Promotional Package" IROC? Made at the end of 1985 model run in Van Nuys, CA. They all came with 305TPI/215HP, Th700R4,3.42:1 gears, IROC package with 16" wheels. Nothing rare there, but none of them had hood louvers, rear deck spoiler, IROC lettering, stripes nor TPI markings. Just two colors; 400 red, and 100 black. Plain wrapper sleeper. I never run into many people that know about these cars, and only see another one every few years. Anyone else have one, or know of them?

They made them in 1985 only, and just 500. The RPO code on my window sticker is 1C5, but when I try to look it up, it isn't listed on any of the sites RPO lists. It's a true mutation. It looks like an RS with Z28 badges, 16" IROC wheels, and IROC fog lights, only there were not any 3rd gen RS's 'til 1987. I remember when these things were on some of the local Chevy lots. They sat for weeks sometime, because people wanted IROC lettering and stripes, not realizing how few they made. They're very rare, but not worth that much, because no one knows of them. No demand.

Do you have a picture you can post? I'm surprised no one had ever mentioned these before on the site. Well at least I've never seen a post before. It's interesting to find out about such rare models. If I owned it I don't think I'd drive it everyday for fear that someone would hit me.

The Van Nuys plant built 502 California IROC-Z's in 1985. These carried RPO IC5 (not a "one" C5). These IROC-Z's were identical to all other IROC-Z's with ONE difference -- it did not sport the "IROC-Z" door decal. They also came in other colors besides red and black. I have a black & white pic of one heading down the assembly line and appears to be white in color -- definitely not red nor black. Can you verify that your car originally did not come with hood louvers or rear spoiler? The pic I have has the hood raised, so I cannot discern if it has louvers. Is your VIN label affixed on the underside of the hood to confirm originality? I can tell in my pic that it does have a rear spoiler.
So your car did originally come with striping and if it is a TPI car, it came with all the "Tuned Port Injection" decals / emblems. There is no official word that all California IROC-Z's were TPI.

Willie, with all due respect, I bought the car new. I saw quite a few when they were new, on the road and at the local dealerships and the number dwindled as the years past, but they were all as I described above. That's what attracted me to them.
cdartz, It's garaged most of the time. 42750 original miles. I have pictures. I'll figure out how to post it here.

I almost didn't put the spoiler back on my IROC when I painted it. I got really fond of how it looked without it. If I didn't have to weld and fill all of the holes, it would have stayed off.

Hey Calroc, do you mind if I use those pics (actually the bigger ones that I found) on the IROC Homepage? I'd love to have a seemingly rare IROC on the site.

I can attest to the fact that they do actually exist. I own one also, not the original owner, but I have one. I have spoke with 2 different original owners of these cars,3 now, one of which bought the one I own, new. They did come with smooth hoods and no spoiler. If I knew how to post pictures on the site, I would show mine... I do not have as much info as Dave, but I know they are a "sleeper" that is for sure.

This thread started back in Sept'00. The temp site that Chris (cdartz) was nice enough to put up for the original pic's has expired.

Does anyone know the actual number of these produced in black in 1985?
By using the vin info posted on this subject, I just found out that I own one of these cars also. It was originally black and it is now unfortunately blue. I did search through most of the previous posts and the number of black ones seem to be around 100. If this is true, I will restore this car back to its original form and color.
Thanks,
Tony

Holy sh*t this thread is from 2 years ago. I was wondering why I was reading my own replies and didn't remember writing them at first. I searched to see if I still had the pictures that I hosted for calroc back then, but I can't find them. Sorry guys.

scottmoyer,
Thanks for the picture and the window sticker.
I see where you get a credit with that package.
I like the look of it and clean the hood looks good. I like my spoiler though.
If I had the choice back then I would have went with the California model.

Wow, I'm surprised to see this thread surface again. I was the originator two years ago. I am the original owner of the car/window sticker shown above, and still own it. It has 45K original miles now.

calroc,
I was looking for a Z/28 back in 1986, but I liked the look of the IROC-Z because of the one paint scheme. I didn't like the IROC-Z stickers and the fake hood.
I removed my stickers from the side. The hood had to stay. So I was thinking California and met in the middle.

Tony,
Yes, only 100 were black (I have no documentation to offer).
Chet,
Your '86 is beautiful, and such low mileage (I've seen it before)!!
What state are you in? The Calif roc's were only produced in 1985, and in Calif only. Actually, I preferred one of the 400 red ones, but because of the low production numbers (500), the only one I could get my hands on was this black one.
Since those pictures were taken I have returned to the original IROC-Z wheel caps. Visually it is completely stock(including the full interior), but the drive train is slightly modded with a 3.70:1 Ford 9", and a SuperRammed, AFR headed, 6" rodded, Isky cammed, Ross pistoned, SLP/mufflexed exhausted engine (6 years, 9K mi).
