Whats Faster, Turbo Trans am or GNX?

I was watching American Muscle Car on the weekend and this episode was on the Buick Grand National/Regal T Type. According to this show they came out with the GNX in the final year of production (1987), it came with 275 hp. Since both these cars share a similar turbo charged 3.8, I was wondering which one is faster, the TTA or the GNX.I'm not sure what the HP rating is on the turbo trans am, But i know its damn fast.

Well, Motor Trend rated the GNX at 300hp in the road test I have, and the TTA is known to be underrated at its factory 250hp rating.

MT ran a 14 second flat 1/4 with the GNX, and likewise with the TTA. I'd say its about a dead heat. The TTA will do 162MPH though, whereas the GNX won't come close because of aerodynamics.

Motor Trend Sucks...but I still buy it

Car And Driver tested a TTA- 0-60=4.6
1/4= 13.4 @101mph
It also had a TH200R4 as opposed to the 700R4. When they tested a GNX 0-60=4.9
can't remenber 1/4 mile but it was hi 13s.
TTA is faster.

871LE,

Motor Trend sucks NOW...definitely. Trust me, they used to be far better. I don't doubt though that C&D got better performance numbers than MT...they always have. Why, I have no clue. And Road and Track is always way slower than both! Go figure....

I had a feeling the TTA might be faster, but I didn't wanna say that and be proved wrong. Thanks for the C&D numbers!!

As far as stock, I'd say they are about the same in terms or 1/4 mile times, slightly modified though, the TTA will kick it's *** all day long at the track. You can't really compare the two at higher speeds of course because the TTA is way more areodynamic

I'd rather own a TTA

I would go with the TTA. I've owned two grand-nationals and altough they are not gnx's they are basicly the same cars. GNX had an added rear end brace slighty larger intercooler, a ceramic finned turbo and a more efficant exaust. My GN's best time at track was 12.9 1/4 mods were pit bull chip air filter and dump tube. My transam is faster than my gn's. Still I plan to acquire a GNX someday. one thing great about these cars is they seat 5. I sold one grand national for wifes engagement ring and one went to my brothers garage... it has been stored since new 4700 miles on it. My turbo transam is a daily driver.

There were no TTA's "OFFICIALLY" imported into Canada by GM as far as I know. All TTAs were sold in the US only.

Of course you could buy one and swap the speedo to make it legal for import. Since it is pre-1991, you don't have to convert it to Daytime Running Lights to bring it into Canada.

Would definitely be one of a kind.

I own #609 TTA. The first weekend out racing, it went 13.55 around 101, After some mods (chip and K&N filter) and some other free mods, turned the boost up, it would always run in the 12.80 range with a best of 12.42 @111.

Most of the GNX's i've seen run around 13.70 with mods 12.70,

I know of one for sale in Northern Virginia with less than 500 miles asking $35K.

I think the GNX and the TTA have to be very close, but remember, the GNX was the fastest accellerating/production car in '87. The TTA is only 2 years newer, I can't imagine much changed in the motor, especially considering GM is famous for using left over parts to build new cars.

Now the GNX was a leap ahead of the GN. So please don't compare. What is the weight of a TTA compared to a GNX? That should be the tell tale sign of which car is faster.

I have seen both or should I say all three at the track the tta was the quickest one but, only by 3 tenths then again it all depends on how they were treated being these are not factory fresh cars.
