i was talking to a fellow TGOer about my car and he said that because my car doesnt have GFX it isn't a trans am....Is this true??

isn't the WS3 code the WS6 code for my year??? or what else could it be for that year cuz i heard that it was called something else in that year....

but if my car is a trans am....is it a rare one because it didnt come with GFX???

another thing....if it weren't a trans am would it be considered a formula??? i thought those weren't reintroduced until like 87 or so......

The RPO W62 "Aero Package" ground effects were optional on 1984 Trans Ams. They are not standard (unless you bought a Recaro or 15th Aniversary T/A)

I would say a lot of owners did opt for the aero package in 1984 but there was still plenty that didn't have it. Either way is certainly not going to affect the value of the car any.

I've never heard of WS3. I don't recall seeing that code on the SPID label on the console door in '84 T/A and its not on the build sheet I found under one of the rear seats.

WS4 is the RPO code for Trans Am.

WS6 is a performance suspension option which included larger sway bars, stiffer springs, bushings, shocks, 12.7:1 ratio steering box, 15x7 rims, 4-wheel-disc brakes, and posi-traction rear axle. Your car has the oddball WY6 option which included all the WS6 goodies except the posi-traction. I would guess that the factory was having shortages of posi-traction units and came up with WY6 to keep production moving.

 

Not wishing to hi-jack the thread, but what exactly did the "aero package" consist of?

 

-WS1 is "Firebird Performance value package #1"
-WS2 is unknown
-WS3 is "Firebird Performance value package #2"
-WS4 is Trans Am package
-WS5 is unknown
-WS6 is performance suspension package 82-92
-WS7 is another special performance package (same as WS6 but with drum brakes before 1985.) Later on it was the Users Manual - starting in the mid 90's
-WS8 is "Priced order acknowledged" whatever that means. Might have to do with ordering a car.
-WS9 is taken its the RPO for the Formula package according to thirdgen RPO decoder.

YT9 - Porbably tires

IIRC The "Aero Package" in 1983 & 1984 was simply ground fx, starting in 1987 it also included the wrap around spoiler on the Trans Am, thus "Aero spoiler" . In 1985 & 86 the spoiler was available but not a part of the package until 1987. In 1986 the spoiler was deletable to the base wing for credit. In 1989 - 1992 the Base firebird could get an Aero Package that was the same as the Trans Am, But it did not get the aero Spoiler or the T/A hood or fenders.

i see nothing on the outside that it is missing that a trans am that year would have

Real dumb because the power bulge hood was only optional on the LG4 Trans Am in 1982. We're talking about a 1984 Trans Am.

 

Ok, I made up a picture that shows the two different options.

The B97 Wheel Spoiler was standard on regular 1982-1984 Trans Am and 1982-83 Recaro T/A.

The W62 Aero package was standard on 1983 Daytona Pace Car T/A, 1984 Recaro T/A, and 1984 15th Aniversary T/A. It was optional on regular 1984 Trans Am.

 

My 84 T/A doesnt have GFX....(luckily).

 

yah...not to knock the 82-84's with gfx but i am really glad mine doesnt either.......
