Z28 Identification by VIN

I have a chance to pick up an 85 Z28 in good condition for pretty cheap. The car is super basic, though. It has all the exterior abd dash badging of a Z28, as well as "Z28" on the parts code sheet in the center console.

I am wondering if there is a vin character that would verify if it is a real Z or not.

The car is so basic that it scares me that one of the many owners may have thought that the car would be cooler if it was a Z28 and rebadged it, as well as change the console out with one from a Z with the proper package level.

I know it sounds far stretched, but I have heard of it happening. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Its a stretch,

The console sheet should (WILL) have the VIN, compare it against the VIN on the windshield.

Then you know.

Also the Berl, and the SC never came with an HO "G" or TPI "F" engine. Keep that in mind.

No way of telling from the vin. But as okfoz says there is a vin no. on the SPID in the console, it should match the vin on the dash. If it doesn"t walk away.

Your discription makes it sound like a Z28 though. The amount of time and money you would have to do to change an 85 sport coupe to an 85 Z28 would be prohibitive. It's more than badges, we're talking GFX's, rims etc.

Not all Z28's, or Iroc-z's for that matter, are loaded with options, some could be very basic.

It's not that uncommon for a Z28 to have few or even no other options. A lot of original owners were more interested in performance options than expensive, heavy "creature comfort" accessories.

My 84 Z28 has almost no options, apart from a power antenna and remote hatch release. If I wanted a slow, overweight, bloated, and over-optioned pig of a car I'd get a GTA.

i have picked up an 82 Z tonight and its all basic too

t has manual doors, a/c, tach dash, orange Z 28 emblem on dash, gray silver rocker z28 emblems, dont know what on rear bumper cover, never looked yet at that yet lol

LG4 originally, still unknown tranny

no spid label or build sheet

so far it is still a true Z28 until otherwise proven somehow

good luck with yours

maybe someone will have a lil bit of info that may help us both with our Z's
