No Odometer, but speedo works fine

I am going to move this from another forum do to needing an answer quickly.
Here's one for the books. I have 3 different instrument clusters, 2 of them are KPH for speed, and the other a 145 MPH U.S. style.
The trick here is none of the clusters will register mileage. The factory cluster has 29,000 km on it. I took it apart tonight to find the driver gear in the odometer, was melted. The speedometers ALL work great, and smooth but none have working odometers. WHATCHA THINK????????? I am at a loss. The 1987, and 1989 factory service manuals I have would suggest this cannot happen, unless the driver gears are all bad........... Is this normal for a car that sits for a longtime? My T/A sat for 8 years, the other KPH sat for 4-5 years, and the American spec is a longtime in the waiting. Thanks much.

The '89 T/A's had electric speedos in them, it had one motor that drives the needle, another motor that drives the odometer. From what it sounds like, the odometer motors are shot in them possibly, plus I believe the driver board that is in the KPH speedo's are different than the MPH ones.
