found this with a google:
Quick Camaro vs Mustang facts:
*Mustang sold 1,291,544 cars before Camaro came out (Ford made alot of money because it was just a reskinned Falcon).
*Between the years of 1967 (the first year of Camaro) and 1998 Camaro sold 4,734,253 to Mustang's 6,108,240
*Camaro's best year was 1979 (282,571)
*Mustang's best year was 1966 (607,568)
*Camaro outsold Mustang in 1977, 1978,1984,1985, and finally in 1991.
*When Camaro came out (1967) Mustang sales dropped 133,000 units over the previous year.
*1st year of the gen2 Camaro, sales dropped by 10,000 cars. The gen3 increased sales by 63,000, gen 4, you can't honestly say because of the artificially low production of the 93's (39,000), but the 94s sold 49,000 more than the 91's.
*Mustang's 2nd gen dropped sales 41,000, MustangII increased sales by 240,000 cars(!), the fox Mustang increased sales by 177,000, the SN95 upped sales by 9,000. The 99 restyle dropped sales by 44,000 cars, but sales jumped by 90,000 the following year.
*Mustang outsold Camaro by over 2 to one in 1967,1974,1988,1996,1998,1999,2000,2001,2002 (I didn't include 1990 &1993 because those were short production runs for Camaro).
*The margins Camaro outsold Mustang in order of size): 1984(126,000), 1977(65,000), 1982(59,000), 1983(30,000), 1991(3,000).

Although we often consider them rivals I cannot bring myself to really compare my Firebird, or a Camaro to a Mustang. Its like Apples and oranges...
Lets face it, the Mustang is a light weight car that was designed for Secretaries. However the advent of puting in a big engine attarcted the male segment. GM want after that male segment, and in my opinion did not consider the female as much. Our cars are larger and heavier, although they seem to compete with the mustang, in reality the 79-93 Mustang is as close to a Camaro as it is to a Chevette with a v8. Actually I think the Mustang and Chevette are more similar than the Mustang & Camaro.

u have to consider that GM compete with it self by offering chevy and pontiac , buyers ad 2 choices
camaro/firebird that are basically the same car
so when u compare to mustangs i think its more
appropriate to sum the numbers

I agree, the Camaro and Firebird seem to be the "same"
Believe it or not I have worked on both, and the Firebird is easier to work on, at least the dash. Also there seems to be things on the Firebird that was not on the camaro. In reality, the Firebird is suposed to be a step up from the Camaro. For example Where the camaro has a base interior, a middle interior and a deluxe interior, the Firebird has the middle interior as the base and the Camaros Deluxe is like the mid interior and the Deluxe is really superior.

What about Capri? One of the things that helped the mustang sales and hurt the camaro sales was that the camaro had a sister car (firebird) that was good competition. The mustang's sister car (capri) was not well received.

I always thought the Cougar was a larger car even in the late 60's when it was introduced, at least it looked that way to me. I know during the 70's, 80's & 90's it became a sister car to the Thunderbird and Mark series, and in the late 90's it became its unique bubble with sharp edges that really needed help and was droped a few years back.
The Capri I assumed started life in the early 70's I had a "friend" that had a 71 (I think) and he always claimed it was the same as a mustang but Mercury's version. In the early 90's the Capri started to share what appears to be the same platform as the Mazda Miata. It was another homely car.
If you really want to add some other models in there that competed against the Firebird and Camaro you can look to Dodge in the 90's they had the Stealth, and Mitsubichi had the 3000GT, both I thought were reasonably attractive (we actually made the prototype rear glass for the convertible Mitsu 3000GT.) But I thought wat really killed them is they were overpriced and they were Front wheel drive.
Much like the Probe it too was originally going to be a Mustang, But because of the uproar from Mustang fans they decided to keep the Mustang Rear Wheel drive...
