1le Vins

Hi I'm new here and was wondering if there is a difinitive list of 1989 IROC 1LE vin numbers out there? I've owned this camaro since 2003, it has 12,000 act miles, but was raced by Matt Williams at the Mid-Ohio racetrack. It has all the correct items for the 1LE package but some of the interior was replaced before i got it and now the codes are missing from the center console. It was represented to me as being an original 305TPI/5speed combo. It has the alum. driveshaft, 3.45 Posi rear, dual cats, Huge sway bars, no A/C. It was in great shape until some jerks stole it in late 2003. they beat the tar out of it and were taking out the 5 speed due to damage to the synchros. im in the process of re-building it finally, and was wondering if it is original, shoud i make it stock, or should i leave the roll cage in it and put all 92 body peices on it? (i have all original body, but damage to fenders and hood makes me not want to re-use them). If anyone out there can help me I would really appreciate it. all the vin decoders out there dont tell me for sure thats why i'm looking for a list of actual vins.

I have never seen or heard of a list of VIN's for the '89 1LE cars as opposed to a list that does exist for the '90 1LE's. But that doesn't mean there is not one. Past experiences with collecting data and hearing stories about '89 1LE's this is what I have gathered. The first batch of '89 1LE Camaros were loaded on a train and derailed somewhere in the southwest (New Mexico?).
I don't think any of these cars survived. Batch #2 were built in the KL155000 range,I have two VIN's, and a third batch was built in the KL194000-KL198000 range. I have four VIN's from this range. Out of the 111 1LE's built I have heard only about 10 have been located and are in the hands of collectors.

I don't have any further info on this topic except I can fill in one small gap. The train derailed near Flagstaff, Arizona. A handful of junkyards in the Phoenix area won bids to all the cars. Part of the agreement between GM and these yards was that all the cars tops be cut off at the beltline (just above the top edge of the door) so they could not be resold. I drove 150 miles one way about six months after the derailment to check this out. It was like being in Camaro heaven. Most of these cars had between 4 and 10 miles total. New parts lay strewn all over the dirt. I drove to this yard several times in the following months to take home carloads of parts.

The VIn would not specify a 1LE or not. the 1LE would be on the SPID sheet in your center console.

Right, but like i said, they replaced the center console before they sold it and its not the original center console. so did someone fake a 1LE, or is it a true one? it has everything the car is supposed to, thus i am confused.

Take your VIN to a GM parts counter and ask them for a list of option codes. I know in Canada I can do this ... easy way to see if it is a 1LE or not.

EGADS!!! Congratulations ... you have a R7U Players car!!!

Being a Canadian car, and with the sequence number falling in teh 155xxx-156xxx range, this tells me it there is a 98% chance this is a R7U car.

In 1989, there were 76 1LE's imported into Canada out of the 111 1LE's made that year. Out of the 76, 74 were R7U cars.

Now go look on the cowl of your car, just under the driver's wiper arm and see if there is a CASC plaque with a number engraved on it. As well, take a close look at the top of the plenum and see if you can make out a rectangle area where a sticker would have been. Also look at the throttle body bolts, runner to plenum bolts for yellow/white paint. These are all signs of a Player's car.

Holes in the driver's floorboard from the bolt in roll cage is a good sign too!

Excited now?

Mark.

Thanx for the info there mark! I'm still figuring out how to get whole pics up here in the size alotted. I was told by the Dealer we bought it from that there were only 52 manuals in 89 is that correct? and my car still has the roll cage in it.

VERY EXCITED

Joe

P.S. I just noticed kind of a funny little coincidence(?) in your reply. My VIN ends with1557(76) and you said there were (76) cars taken there Kinda funny huh?

Finding the original roll cage is very uncommon. Most race cars had the cages removed and then the car was sold.

Was the cage installed when you bought it? I am surprized a dealer would sell a car with a cage in it. I don't think they are considered street legal.

All Player's cars were standards. So 74 of the 111 1LE's were R7U cars and 5 speeds. His number of 52 is incorrect.

You can send the pictures to my email and I will resize them for you.

Open your hood and look on the cowl area just below the driver's side wiper arm for a small aluminum plaque.

Here is a picture of an engine bay. Look in the upper right hand corner for the plaque.

I am at work right now but i'll run home in a bit to look and then i'll get back to you. yes, the cage was already in the car when i got it. it has the vent handles and even had an added lap timer and the original fire extinguisher in it before it got stolen. If i can find some pics of it before it got stolen, i'll add them to the e-mail. it came with all the race equiptment still on the car. slicks, decals and the works.

as to the legality of the cage, I was stopped a couple of times before it got stolen and the cop did'nt say a word. one thought it was cool. the other one said it was unsafe to drive with the cage in the car! I almost fell over laughing Luckily i didn't and he let me go with a warning. I work on the biggest strip of dealers in Minn and i was, and will be again, the only sales guy running a dealer plate on a camaro race car The cops always thought the plate was stolen But im a signing officer at the company so i show up in the system.

Sorry to revive an old post but I knew I had these pics of this car. This is 1G1FP21F2KL155776. These were taken at Black & Fuller collision in Austell, GA on March 19, 1992. I have no other info on this car or what it was doing there. I was there doing a parts delivery and noticed the car. I had my camera with me (as I always did) took some pics and jotted down the VIN.

Re: 1le Vins

I was just about to post a similar question...but saw this thread and how someone mentioned (in 2005) that there was a list of the 1990 1LE cars. Anybody have a link to that?

A friend from work told me about a '90 Camaro out near he lives that's been sitting in the grass for a while and seems to think it's a 1LE. I haven't got a chance to go look at it myself, but I do have the VIN for it which I'd like to cross-reference if possible. If it's a true 1990 1LE I might try and scoop it up as a resto-project.

Thanks!

Might as well add this:

Not my car, was local to CT till a few years back, I think this car is in Europe,.... I got the factory interior after a swap to black interior parts.

P.S This car had the factory RPO sheet stuck to the inside of the rear drivers side 'glove-box' in the hatch - not the console like the 80's Thirdgens.
