I have just recently joined this message board and noticed by looking around that I have no clue what you guys are talking about. I noticed a lot of codes and very educated people just by reading the board. I just recently decided to restore my camaro. It hasn't had any major modification and is in fairly good condition. I was wanting to know if anyone could tell me a little bit about my car. It is a 1987 5.7l Tpi Camaro. The vin: 1G1FP2181HL149008. The car has power everything including windows, hatch, seats, and even the rearview mirror. The guy I bought it from said that it was optioned out. So if anyone could tell me a little about the car, I would be greatful. If you need anymore info just let me know. Thanks For Your Time

from what you posted I can tell it's an original 350 car. You will need to decode your RPO codes which should be in the center console box.

Your car has option level three, which is all the power options, the highest option level for 87.

The L before the last six digits means that it was made in Van Nuys...

The 87 350 Camaros came with a Borg-Warner Australian built rear axle with a ratio of 3.27 to 1, or aka a 3.27 rear end. The tranny is a 700R4 automatic with overdrive. Pretty much the same tranny as the 4th gen Camaros. 1987 was the 1st year return for the 350 (L98) in a Camaro. Many people confuse the code for the 350 and refer to it as B2L. B2L was a package that was included when the 350 was ordered. Chevrolet always denotes their engines with an "L" as the first character.

All 1987 350 built Camaros came with an RPO code of J65. That decodes the 4 wheel disk brakes. It also included K34, engine oil cooler. 1987 was also the 1st year for the Bose stereo option. If you have this option, you also have the rear locking hardcover in the rear with the speakers in it.

1987 was the first year for Leather in the Camaro. It wasn't a full leather seat, but just the face of the seats.

The 350 came only as a TPI (Tuned Port Injection). This was the top of the line injection at the time over a carburetor and TBI (Throttle Body Injection).

Post a picture of the SPID label in the center glove box and we can tell you what they all mean.

I found a decoder so here is what I got. Maybe someone could explain some of this to me.

You have every option except the Bose stereo, and power antenna. Otherwise fully loaded.

There wil be some discrepancies as the decoder you used was for 1991. This will be noticed on color items or stripes. Do a search on this website for the RPOs you couldn't find. They have all been discussed here before.

Also, compare some items to my windowsticker listed above and you'll see other discrepancies.

TTJ, soudns like a really nive car. I hope you restore it and keep it nice, as these cars, especailly the TPI cars are going up in value right now...

You even have T-tops which is a bit unusual for a 350 car in 1987, NOT rare mind you as there were plenty made, but it seems that most of them did not have the option.

Sorry guys, I don't have any pic just yet but will try to get some soon. I more than likely will need a lot of your useful information and Im sure you guys will need as much info as I can get you to answer my questions. Ill try to get some pics by tomorrow or sunday.


Also in my attempt to restore my car, I'm in the market for some rims that match my car. The car has falcon rims with a set of falken z rated tires. The tires are a little bit more than use but the rims a in great shape. I was also wanting to know if the IROC came with special rims. Thanks again for all you help and look for the pics in the next couple of days.

The 87 IROC came standard with rims like mine.

I was wondering if your rim on your 87 say Iroc Z. Im found a set of an 86 but they don't say Iroc Z. Not sure what I need.

The Center Caps do say IROC-Z in silver on a black background. The 88-90 ceter caps were aluminum with the logo in black.
