They tires should say on them the psi that is needed. My 245-50-16s say 44psi max.

The MAX PSI stamped on the tire isn't the PSI you need...

If a tire says Max PSI 44 Lbs, that means you should not put more than 44 lbs of air in the tire.. Damage can result if you exceed the maximum for daily use. Max PSI is a warning, not a recomendation. You'll definitely be overinflated at the Maximum pressure the tire was built to handle.

Overinlfated tires will have reduced contact with the road due to the center tread sticking out.. This will cause tires to wear unevenly, not perform as well and it will cause a harsh ride that really isn't necessary.

My GTA door pillar recommends 30lbs front and 30lbs rear for my 245-50/ZR16 tires.. These numbers shouldn't be taken lightly.. They were calculated by GM engineers to give the best tire life and the safest ride..

For *daily* driving, I would stick to what GM recommends on the door sticker... Usually around 28-32 Lbs, depending on the make, model wight of the car.

If you head off the street to the drag strip or race course, then you probably will want to vary the pressure just for those events.. When I autocross, I blow my fronts up to 50 lbs and the back 40.. When I drag race, I blow the fronts up to 50 and let air out of the back to around 25 lbs. I carry an electric pump so I can drive to the events at the GM recommended pressure and then change it when I get there..

P.S. Here's what the AAA has to say about overinflation:

http://www.csaa.com/global/articlede...7C2037,00.html

Overinflation:

An overinflated tire has been operated at higher pressure than recommended by the tire maker or the vehicle manufacturer. High pressure causes the tire to expand more, and wear will be greater in the center of the tread than toward the sides. The inside and outside edges wear less because they contact the road with less force than does the center of the tread. Overinflation shortens tire life and can make vehicle handling seem "light" or "skittish," particularly on wet roads.
