Calling Camaro Experts
Ok, so I have gotten into a debate in another car forum. I own a Chrysler Conquest, and one of the guys on the boards asked a question about an IROC as compared to a Z28. No problem, I answered the best I could, which naturaly led to the ignorant SOB's showing up with the Camaros are slow, and ******* jokes. Whatever, we all know thee are some slow ones and some fast ones (just like the Conquest). anyway, some guy posts that all Camaros are junk, except for the king daddy 1970 1/2 Z28 with the ZL1 427. Now I am pretty much positive that the only ZL1's in that era were made in 1969, and that the only big block offered in 1970 was the 396(402) in the SS, and certainly not in the Z28. Someone please tell me I am right. I have found a couple websites that support this, but just want confirmation form a real Camaro expert. Thanks.

I am no Camaro expert, but I am pretty sure the ZL1 was only used in 69 in a handful of COPO camaros.
I dont think they ever put the ZL1 in a second gen.

The biggest engine for the second gen was the 396 but Baldwin Motion Chevrolet did put 454s in a few of them(70-71).

Not 3rd gen related, however I will answer.
There were only 69 ZL1s produced in 69. There were no ZL1s in 70 or ever again until 2002 when GMMG of GA made 69 more with Chevrolet's blessing. The Z28 in 69 came with a 302 and in 1970 was a 350. The 350 was the largest engine the Z28 has ever gotten from Chevrolet. The SS received the 350 or the 396. The only 454 in a 2nd gen was an aftermarket like Baldwin-Motion or others.
No 1st or 2nd gen Z28s ever came with the aluminum ZL1 block.
Tell your friend on the other board that we enjoy people like him that think we are slow. He can have his 2.6 Turbo that takes him to 60 in 7.8 seconds or run the 1/4 in 15.9 seconds at 86mph. With simple mods, his car is fast, but the Camaros will still out perform it!
