Original battery replacement for 88 GTA

Hello all,

I posted this question somewhere else on the board but couldn't get the answer I wanted...

I have a 1988 Pontiac Trans Am GTA with a 305 TPI engine... I'm looking to buy a new ACDelco battery. When I do a search on ACDelco's web site, I get 10 results! (http://webcaps.ecomm.gm.com/canada/V...e=18&part=2476)

Wich one is the closest possible to the original battery that came with my car in term of size, look, specifications etc...

Wich one in the lot is the best battery and still with the same size and look as the original one?

Did our cars cames with dual terminals battery?

Do I need to buy a battery said for 110/AMP gen?

I'm confused!

Thanks for helping out a newbie!

I picked up a Delco battery last summer for my 1990 GTA..

I just went to a GM dealer and asked.. The parts guy looked it up on the parts computer and got me the correct one. I bolted it in and it looks and acts just like the battery that came with the car originally.

The stock battery is a Delco 75-6YR

The 7YR is the heavy duty/professional (read more expensive) model.

What is most important is the physical size of the battery. It's got to fit on the tray. Our cars take a standard size battery that was used in many other models. (G.M. didn't design special batteries for each car they made ) Believe it or not, the battery our GTAs use is the same one they used in the 4 cyl Pontiac Fiero..

So the best battery in the ACDelco brand would be the 75-7YR right? And it's the same size as the original one?

Their is 2 versions of this battery, one that say "SIDE TERMINAL" and one "W/110 AMP GEN. SIDE TERMINAL". I imagine that to be original I should buy the first one?

Yes.. the 75 refers to the size of the battery.. All group 75 batteries are the same size.. And YES, you need the side terminal version

Apart from physical size, batteries have a capacity (measured in amps) that tell you how much power they can produce and for how long.

The batteries listed on the site are all the same size and they range from the cheapest to the most expensive. As TraviZ says.. They'll all fit and will all work fine. I suggested the 75-7YR because it's middle of the road and not too expensive.

If you have some special need like a modified high compression engine, or if you use the car in the winter on sub zero days when you can't plug the car in, you might want a more expensive higher capacity battery.

Unless you live in the middle of nowhere, you must have a GM or AC Delco dealer nearby.. Rather than mess around on the web, just walk in to a dealer and buy one (That is unless you get a much better price on that internet site.. Then it might be worthwhile)

You can get Delco batteries at any number of places, for about half or less of what a dealer will charge you.

There are things in the world that MUST come from the dealer; things that you can get elsewhere but the best place to get are the dealer; things you can get from the dealer but it's stupid to get them there; and things you absolutely CANNOT get at the dealer. It's important to understand what parts belong in what category.

Batteries, tires, and gasoline fall into category #3.

GTA Jim is correct, although the 1988 GTAs came originally with a Delco Freedom II battery. My red GTA came with this battery and it lasted for the first four years of ownership.

The newer style Delco units have the current Delco blue color scheme on the decals, whereas the old units used gray/black Delco Freedom II decals. I do not know anywhere you can get those these days.

I think the blue Delco batteries are as "correct" as you can get these days....

Okay guys, I found a place with better prices than GM for ACDelco batteries where I live.

So the original Delco Freedom II battery that were originally in GTAs, were 75 series right?

How much CCA did they have?

What was the weight of this battery in pound?

Did they have an "eye" to look at the condition of the battery?

I just wan't to compare the actual batteries with the original one.

Thanks a lot!

No one has the answers to my last questions?

I promise I will stop this thread after I know these last couple of things.
