The times they got out of the IROC were pretty good when all the factors discussed earlier are considered.
Now ways to make the show better:
1. Fire the Turbo twins and get Dean Skuzza and Cameron Evans. It doesn't have to be those two, but race car drivers or mechanics would make excellent hosts.
2. Don't hire the first four clowns you get off the street. At least hire people with higher skill levels than being the lube guy at Jiffy Lube. A great way to get contestents for the show would be to surf the message boards(like Thirdgen.org) and pick members who are very knowelgable, have a good rap with the board, and have built their own cars.
3. Maybe give the guys three or four days to turn the wrenches on the cars. If you are using experienced guys, they could so some serious mods with that much time on their hands(heads, cam, intake, headers, nitrous, custom chips, swap a rear end, etc.) Also make sure that the cars they are modding are in top mechanical shape and will be able to handle the additonal power without frying rear ends, trannys, throwing rods, main bearings, etc.
4. Force all contestents to familarize themselves with drag racing by practicing before the show. This won't be an issue if they put experienced people on the show.
5. The most important point: Give both teams 10 or 15 trial runs down the strip. Let each team decide who will drive(if they are smart, the same guy will drive). This will hopefully allow them to become familair with the cars and work out any bugs. Then give them 1 race to decide who will win both cars.

That would avoid things like big-block trannys for small blocks (like in the mustang episode), and larger aluminum radiators in blower cars were a stocker can barely fit on 300 hp cars when the stockers can support close to 500 hp (this camaro episode).
If they had one specialist in the field he could also help people understand wwhich mods will do the most, and atleast offer a bit of assembly/disassembly advice to avoid wasted production time.
The silliest part is that a basic internet search would yield "specialty" groups of enthusiasts for specific cars that could advise the producers of likely candidates for show advisors. Here on this site we could make suggestions of likely people just from this site that could make better advisors than anyone they could have found regarding third gens.
The mustang enthusiast sites could have yielded a decent advisor for the mustang episode.
The 240-260-300Z sites could have yielded a better advisor for that show.
As far as Dean and Cam, I would have to say that I would have been interested in hearing their personal opinions and experiences with the vehicles at hand.

Did they say they were both 350 cars? I saw the red one had T-tops, I though you could only get the 305 with the T-tops, at least that is what the deal was in 89 when I bought mine.

I'm sure the History Channel has a statement regarding replaying their copyrighted shows for public display is not allowed without prior permission. Let's not get TGO into legal issues over a show that wasn't that great to begin with.
Please, no more asking for copies of this show or requests to host it on a site for others to see. If this is done thru PMs, then TGO can not be held responsible, but no posts regarding a link to the pirated show are allowed on TGO. If any are found, the post will be deleted.

Note they mentioned the fuel system, needed 60 psi at higher capacity, then they dropped it. I'd guess someone behind the scenes chiselled the body and put in a new HV pump.
Also note the blower is overdriven about 2.5:1 by the engine pulley, so 4000 rpm at the motor is 10,000 rpm at the blower.
Note the young guys got the best time with shifter in "auto" and not hand shifting. There's a lesson in that.
Whoever designed the blower mounting needs to install one on an actual car, that upper hose deal is plain wrong. Should be no interference in an expensive deal like that.
Nice the see the best looking cars ever built get some TV time!!!

no, the guy says they have to INSTALL a new in-line pump because odf the 60 psi capacity and then the computerized graphic shows the pump setup

Personally, if they don't feel the need to reference knowledgable sites like this in particular to experienced car owners, why would they look after the fact for copyright infringements?

A&E/History Channel order line for a copy of this episode:
1-800-708-1776
VHS only!!!
item # AH44234
they said they are slowly switching over to DVD, everyone needs to call that number, press 1 to order, and then tell them they need to make this video in DVD.

They do have people that checks for that. Copyright infringement is a major deal. Taking the time to verify the accuracy of their content is not.

One random comment about the ET's they are running
Keep in mind most of the guys they have on the show are inexperienced in drag racing
and who really wants somebody with sub par driving skills barrelling down a track at over a hundred miles an hour?

I have stacked filter gaskets before by having the old one stick to the block, but you know as well as I do that they got in a big hurry and screwed up the oil feed/return lines somehow lines. probably left one off.

innexperience and a state of mind derived from people who only drive stick and never wanna drive anything else. People in a pontiac forum i used to frequent when i had one used to try manually shifting their auto all the time, they always came back with results showing less performance than just sticking it into drive. You'd figure some old school guys would have learned that but they dont really frequent the internet too often. I have an uncle who builds hot rod cars that still believes that once you use synthetic you can't use anything else. It's a lack of communication with other members of a automotive community that allows that type of thinking.
I doubt those kids will keep the camaros, they wouldn't know what to do with them or how to drive them. Much more likely is that they'll sell them or part them out and use the money to buy their skyline conversion body kits and 6000watt speakers with magnets big enough to make them sterile from 20ft away.

I always manually shift my 700 car but I watch my RPM closely anything too high and you are wasting your time.
The reason I manually shifted is because a huge point of failure in a 700 is the forward input sprag. Even the special 29 element sprags will fold up and go home when faced with too many WOT shifts. Especially with sticky tires and any kind of decent horsepower.
Sure there were some diode input sprags around for a while but metal fatigue from improper metalurgy caused most of those to fail (it was hit and miss).
The difference is manually shifting you get the added support of the little overunning clutches helping the input sprag in manual 1, 2, and 3. They have to release in 4th or the tranny would bind.
Also in manual first when you launch you have the low reverse clutches helping to hold the low roller from slipping and being damaged.
The way I understand it is that 4L60E's (in 4th gens) only have some of these benefits.
BTW if you are interested, from a guy that builds trannys I have read these guys site, they not only build 700's the way I used to , they have incorporated every new product into their trannys that I would have if I were still building.
I may actually buy one from them just because I can't get all of the parts anymore, and I don't know if I want to switch the B4C to a T-56. I just thought you might be interested to know.
http://www.transmissioncenter.net/700r4.htm
anyways regardless of all of this, Im betting those fool throttle dudes didn't know any of this. I just wanted to make sure the rest of you don't go spouting nonsense that manually shifting a 700R4 is bad.
It is bad because you will likely go too high in RPM and wo't concentrate on everything else, so you will lose.
It isn't bad if you want your tranny to live longer.

Actually in my experience by simply leaving it in drive the transmission shifts faster. If I leave it in drive there is no lag between gears.
But I think my car is screwy...

the speed of the gear changes are identical.
putting it in 1st jacks up the pressure some, so on a worn trans, it helps.
also, since the shiftpoints arnt ideal, you can gain time by manually shifting a dead stock car.
the thing is, you need to go down the track 15-30 times, each time shifting a little diffrent until you figure out what the car wants.
they only got 3 runs, and each one counted.
personally, if i was doing that, i would still manually shift it... athough i already have a very good idea of when i needed to shift it.

I agree on the manual shifting points. They only had 3 trys, however, us 3rd gen owners have the opertunity to see where our cars can be shifted for best times. There are threads on here showing time slips with manual and auto shifting. Def decent differences, especially if you have a nice aftermarket shifter, shift light, and better rpm readout. I know many that manual shift, which is why they spend so much attention to the shifter.
As for the show...
I liked it because i got to see third gens. 2 beautiful, well kept third gens just as old as mine. Theres no where else i would get to see those cars on tv and actually have a show dedicated to them. However, they needed to fix a few things which others mentioned above already somewhat:
-cut out the IROC racing footage (circling the track lasted for 5 min of the show)
-i think the supercharger 7000rpm reference really was geared towards the car's rpm. None of these guys were knowledgable on these cars and being import tuners they would know any better (more than likely). The system does however work with a 2.5:1 pulley that would make the charger spin faster than actual engine rpm. but think about that mathematically at 7000rpm
-get rid of these guys, they are a joke. Some of you are on here defending them, but i think they should just restructure the show. Put some knowledgable people on there that can tell us about cams, heads, and tuning. Im so tired of trying to watch full throttle, pimp my ride (ha...just maybe), and overhaul in hopes of actually seeing specs on these buildups to help me learn more. Instead they have to gloss over everything, making the show appeal to a general audience. Very unfortunate.
-I dont feel a better connection to the show because these guys are supposed to be average joes like.
-Give the guys more time and actually overhaul the entire car-suspension, chassis, tranny, engine, maybe even interior.
-guys that own these cars are watching these shows and want to see what is being done to their cars. When you try to make a gameshow out of these buildups, it becomes a joke and quite worthless as far as being informative.
ill go ahead and stop, sorry the long post. I give the show a B only because it showcased such wonderful cars. If only speed vision would do a nice 3rd gen buildup now.

Besides, even if one stuck on the filter mount, would you still get a leak like that? Never had a gasket stay behind on me (I agree with them screwing up a line and not going to argue otherwise... I'm just curious).

actually, yes you would
if you change the filter adn the old rubber seal stays on, theres two things that can happen:
1. it leaks HORRRIBLY.. like on the show.
2. the pressure skyrockets.. last time that happened, the filter actually buldged out.
its just a simple check to make sure the old one came off, but alot of people dont do it... i always check now, but only because ive made that mistake in the past.

the shop i work for made that mistake about 2 or 3 years ago on a car (double gaskets) and the car drove about 5 miles and tanked. It had built up pressure and the engine blew. the way it looked though wasnt anything like it did in the show. their problem seemed fuel line related and not just filter.

Heh, thanks. Hopefully that'll scare me into remembering every time. Sometimes I look, most of the time I don't, guess I rely on my quality PF25 to come out in one piece too often.
Hey, I actually learned something from this show.

My post was trying to figure out how the scene in "Gone in 60 Seconds" has anything at all to do with this thread. Maybe instead of telling us to have a memory, you should pay attention to the content of the thread.
The last thing we want now is another, "What movies or TV programs have 3rd gens been in?" We've been over that before!
