preserving low milage camaro

I just had a question referring to preserving a low milage car (third gen fbody to keep it legit). If one were to get a low milage camaro and store it for an extended period of time, what would be in store to keep parts from oxidizing/rusting and getting lot rot?

Here's a -bump- for you. I'd like to learn more about this, too as I may move away and leave my cars back home for a long time if I find out you can't keep cars without rusting in near proximity to the ocean.

I heard you should change the oil, disconnect the battery, get some moth ***** or similar pest-control medium, keep the car in an environmentally controlled atmosphere, keep the car raised but not completely dangling to keep most of the load off the suspension and to avoid flattspotting, apply oil on likely rust-prone areas, keep it covered, keep the hood popped to release tension, add fuel stabilizer to a full tank of gas, and apply a good coat of wax to a clean exterior.

anyway, I bet someone much more knowledgeable will chime in and inform us.

Having a car sit inside a locked garage doesn't make them age any faster, but they still age. There is no way to perfectly preserve them short of permenantly sealing them in a plastic bubble.

Rodents are always a concern, but to me the number one concern is water. Unless the storage facility is climate controlled (heated in the winter, cooled in the summer) then water will condense when the temp changes and subsequently bare metal parts will oxidize.

Seeing more and more of this lately. People wanting to buy lower mile Thirds or asking how to keep them mint. Very cool. Might be why I see less and less nice Thirds on the road (unless they take them out like once a week) and more and more at shows/cruises or in garages/storage.

Cars will usually be fine if you garage them and keep them covered in there. As long as you drive them sometimes and not just leave them. I know a few people with mint low-mile Thirds that did this and they are still perfect after all these years. With no mechanical issues either.

i think i saw it in a la forza magazine as well, do an internet search, yes it is true, its a mat you drive your car on, a clear car cover zippers onto it, you plug it in and it inflates. i think it constintly flows filtered air as well

Its weird because i never hav issues with mine and its as old as all the other 3rd gens... And thanks for the info 85Berl im gonna check it out

dunno about the price but they advertise them all the time in dupont registry, I'd expect it to be pretty pricey as they come with their own fan to blow the bubble up and keep it cool

That's not a bad idea for someone who might have to store their car for winters or for long periods of time due to militay deployment........

I have my 25th T/A stored in a "CarJacket". (Basically the same thing as the bubble). And I love it.

A few reasons i can think of... everyones motives with this are different, but here are a few.

1. Driving a car in mint condition/low miles every once in awhile is a feeling not many get the oppurtunity to feel. A car that is not driven every day, you can appreciate more than a daily driver.

2. Owning a low mileage mint condition car for value/worth

3. Special value from a personal expireince, relationship, ect...

Everyone is going to have a different reason for storing there car, personally i always liked #1, i have always had a weekend warrior car, i drive either on weekends, or once a month when i got around to it, and there is nothing like it. Of course, there is no point in storing a car that isnt worth storing, like beat up, high miles, no personal value, ect...

absolutely.

Its a great feeling to open the garage door and pull the sheet off, not driving it for daily use keeps it as a toy, kinda like the de sheeting ritual is saying 'its playtime now, a moment to yourself, not to rationality and daily chore'

even though my car has 127k on it, it is still pretty, and i still adore driving it.

the carcoon is a great product, and not that pricey.

in reality, the difference in condition between a badly stored car, and one stored in a carcoon would be more than the price of the carcoon after a couple of years.

Good luck trying to preserve it. Please do not set your expectations too high. Mine's been a garage queen (drive it less than 1K a year) for a long time now and things still deteriorate (seals, glues, fabric). Get out and enjoy the car. My cousin had a Monte Carlo he hardly ever drove and wound up with lots of problems, one of which was a blown head gasket. I wonder how many of those cars that Jay Leno has or sit in museums could actually be driven out of the garage. Anyways, speaking as someone looking for another toy, condition is more important than mileage.
