Re: R7U RPO Code
If your interested ... the owner of that car is interested in selling it. It is fully documented and complete (as you can see in the pictures). Yes he want's a pretty penny for it, but it is one of the most complete and intact cars I have seen.

On this board, is 1LEPROTOTYPE. He was involved in this racing back then. His car is one of the early "work in progress" vehicles.
As far as pictures, you can see some pictures on my site:

The US based ones were not as "formalized" as the Canadian ones. There were Camaro's campaigned by a few people, even some with Canadian drivers from the Player's series.

Woa ... they are not all mine ... just a collection of pictures.
I own two Player's Challenge Trans Ams. I only know the history on the one car ... and I am working on the other one.

So if you bought an R7U or 1LE car from the dealer with a 350 and used it in the players or SCCA series, you had to race a road course with an automatic transmission?
Yikes!
I should add, that I'm not saying that this particular car is a 350 auto. but the two combos were 305 5-speed or 350 automatic.
Therefor some race cars had a 350 auto.

if you bought an r7u from the dealer it was always a 305 TPI 5spd. The 1les came in both 305/350s but the R7Us were all 305 5 spd.. well at least in 91 they were

Strangely enough ... everyone that owns one will tell you that they are the strongest running 305's they've ever seen. The guy with the car in the pictures has run low 14's on street tires at 2400ft alt. I don't ever recall a 305 5speed car turning low 14's from the factory! I recall the best times where 14.6 or 14.7 and that was corrected to sea level.
Now the Player's cars did get a GM PROM ... most were returned to GM except for the final race cars which were allowed to keep them. GM basically tweaked around 30 or so settings to optimise the cars. They adjust the Shift light to 5250, set the fuel cut off, leaned out the fuel curve (Yes... leaned out!), and played with the timing. Overall GM claimed 10-15 HP maybe from the PROM.
Keep in mind, it was not a race of the "fastest" car, rather the best prepped car and best driver.
1LE cars are great cars.
R7U/A4U/A4Q cars are factory built race cars. (A4U was the code for 87 and 88, A4Q was 86 only).
Mark.

Let's clarify what showroom stock means:
- Open Exhaust - side pipes as per the race series
- GM PROM
- engine was "batch built" to specification (tighter control on tolerances)
- low 14's = 14.4 I recall.
- Car is race prepped - suspension and aligment characteristics all tuned
- 6 point cage with halo bar (read: no body flex)
I am not here to defend the numbers, just report on them. I am a history buff and document what I find.
My point was that a Player's car "appear" to be strong runners compared to what you would have bought off the showroom floor. GM will denounce this an say they are all stock, but it has been a common theme amongst owners and race drivers that the cars had more power than GM let on. Take for example in 1986, the L69 motors were rated at 180HP. The player's car were chassis dyno'd at 188 rear wheel HP. That tells me that the attention to details and tolerances leads to better power.
