Anyway to find out the gearing of this axle? And where would VIN be....
Hey, I have an '84 z28 auto parts car outside. There's no engine and the interior is pretty much all the way taken out. So where can I find the vin? I'm trying to figure out what gearing it has.
I can't get to the actual axle as it's on blocks, and our tent fell down on it and snow's covering it. So what would be the easiest place to get to and find it? I hear it's posted in the rear by the hatch but can I get a more detailed explanation as not only is it super cold outside, with the tent falling down on it and snowed over it's real hard to get in and out of hehe.
Anyways, I see the L69 has either 3.42 or 3.73 (option) and the LG4 has the 3.23.
Anyways, if I at least find out what motor it had (no motor) then maybe I can have an idea of what it has.

Actually, the VIN is in the same place as it is on most cars. Look at the very front of the dash on the drivers side at the base of the windshield.

yeah, the vin decoder won't tell me the axle gearing, but it will at least tell me the engine code. Which is a start, (or if it's the 3.42)
and trickster, is there anything you don't know? You always seem to know the easy stuff like this and like the totally hard stuff as well hehe

Well KBeez,
If you have the VIN and it tells you the engine size. Then go to the site listed below.:lala: :lala: :lala:

Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
There's a code stamped into the forward side of the passenger side axle tube. Once you are able to get that, you can check it here http://www.hioutput.com/tech/ratio.html That will tell you the stock ratio that came in the axle. The only true way to determine what ratio is actually in it, is to remove the rear cover and check for two numbers stamped into the ring gear. They'll be something like 41:12; divide the smaller number into the larger one to get the actual ratio.
