Rear end gears in 86
I have an 86 Trans Am with TPI. I bought it with 2.77 rear gears. I recently come to hear that the 86 has 3.27 gears. Which did they have, or both? If both, which was standard? Did they start with one and then switch?

85 may have been like that; don't know about 86 though... seems like there were 5-speeds that year. But TPI cars didn't interest me much so I could easily be wrong.

I am only refering to TPI cars in 86. Just wondering if there really was more than one available. I only noticed 2.77 so far.

No, I learned long, long ago. That info causes more trouble than what it is worth. It may be fine for the Chevs but I am talking about a Trans Am here. The numbers, the whole G92 thing, it is all based on the Camaro and someone tried to just attach Pontiac stuff to it. Thanks though.

The G92 applies to all GM products, whether it is a pontiac trans-am, firebird, firehawk. fiero, or the chevrolet camaro, berlinetta, or lumina. If you have any other doubts about it, why not just call either the ponitac or chevrolet dealer nearest you.

If you have a 3.2x, you either have a 3.23 in a Camaro or possibly a 3.27 in the TA in 1986.
Hey Trickster, I not sure why you started rambling on about that crap. Lets take two 87 third gens for example. One a camaro with the G92 and a firebird with the same equipment as the G92 camaro. The pontiac does not refer to those same options with G92.
Point here is: Someone asks a question about their firebird and a camaro guy tells him to just go look for the G92 listed and that will tell you what you need to know. NO, that just screws him up.
Each have their own history in the tech stuff but they tried to combine the stats. The way it is set up now, it doesn't work.
This got off the subject. I got from this what I need. Thanks

Hey Breazlan,
sorry if that was rambling on about crap to you. However, if you will go back and read the post again. You will notice that not once was anything mentioned about the G92 containing the same options on the camaros as on the firebirds or trans-ams. It was only mentioned that both contain the G92 option code regardless of what each one might have individually. If you would care to check the listing for the G92 RPO code, GM simply refers to it as "AXLE REAR RATIO, PERFORMANCE"
As you said, it is off the subject. Glad you got what you needed.

Breazlan:
If your car happens to have the RPO label still in it, or has a build sheet, look for:
GU2 - 2.73
GH3 - 2.77
GU5 - 3.23
GW6 - 3.27
GU6 - 3.42
GM3 - 3.45
Should be one of them. I don't have my Firebird data handy for '86.
I am with you and madmax on the inaccuracy of the Tech Data; not to mention the RPO decoder. Tech Data says that my '82 LG4 Trans Am only has a 2.73, my build sheet says 3.23.
As a former moderator more or less said, "updating the tech data and RPO decoder just wasn't worth the time or bother". Bad thing is, a few other websites copy the same tech data that just perpetuates the misinformation. Small wonder there are so many repetitive questions.

My SPID is long gone, or I'd help.
My invoice lists a WS1 option, listed as
Option picks for " 86 "
Dunno what all that compromised (I might remember if I rattle my memory banks), but I think the 3.27 is in that somewhere because I dont see it elsewhere.
That or it came with the WS6, but I've never seen that as part of the package.

Do you think, if I wanted to put together a new drivetrain list for the firebirds, I would get some support for it here?
I don't think it would be that tough if lots of people would send me what they have.
To figure out the hardware info, all I would need from people is the first 11 digits from the VIN and all 'G' and 'M' codes and if there is a W66 or Y84 to help determine exact car.
They wouldn't even need to have the car anymore, just some of the printed material it came with.
The power figures I could start with the advertised numbers and make the adjustments from there.
Maybe there is something else that could be added to the list too.
