84 z28 HO

I'm looking at a 84 z28 HO, automatic trans, 3.42 rear, it doesn't run and it's been sitting up for a while, it has 159000 on the odometer. I was wondering is it worth picking up for a couple hundred bucks? Since it's the High Output engine with the dual snorkel and 3.42 rear??

Is there anything significant about the 84 Z-28 HO?

The HOs were really the first high-performance 3rdGens, and the only ones that could rev too. The TPIs were quick, but they can't rev. The HO had a redline of 6000 from the factory (if your tach says 5500, its a factory boo-boo) and would easily rev all the way up there.

They also had a very cool Cold Air Intake setup, with the unrestricted dual snorkel aircleaner and the two snorkels that take cool air from the front of the hood.

There is a chance, too, that you might have a factory fibreglass hood. My '83 HO came with one.

this one does have the dual snorkel, but there is no hoses coming off it, did it come from the factory with hoses coming off the snorkel or is it not suppose to?

My 84 had a 5500 redline. All the HO's I've ever seen back then had 5500 redline. Never saw one with a 6K redline

It would easily rev up there but didn't make any power. I always shifted it right above 5000. Those were the best times shifting like that and not higher. At least in my car.

I've got an '84 Z28 H.O. In '84, they went to a steel hood for the Z28's. I believe 82-83 had a hood made with SMC (type of plastic)
The air cleaner w/ two inlets and the snorkels attached above the radiator are hard to come by, I have heard. But the hoses can be bought from Classic Industries.

From what I remember, you can get them from other cars. Single snorkel from an F-Body for the driver's side. Passenger side can be had from Monte Carlo's. Maybe Cutlass' or Grand Prix's also.

I've got both of my snorkels-everything looks original/dealer replaced under the hood- it also appears that it wasn't cleaned once during the original owner's 19 years!

I have an 83 L69, with the fiberglass hood, 3.73:1 one legger w/aluminum drums well - here's the pic after the recent rebuild... it hauls too!!! Kind of a shame I'll be puttin it on a stand and replacing it with a 406....I want to still run the duel snorkle for the "sleeper" look though!!..

Yea, all the HO cars have the 5500 redline tachs, BUT that was a GM mistake... GM claimes the real redline to be 6000 for the L69 engine.

Yes, there should be two hoses coming off the air cleaner that hook up to a scoop on either side of the rad. The scoops sorta look like black plasctic oven mits.
