82 Pace Car on Ebay. Is it Fake?
I sent an email off to the seller to get a confirmation on his ad. He states these cars were unavailable for 10 years after production and that this car is not a clone, but is a real car and the 10 years of no title info is accurate. I also told him of all the things I saw that made the car look fake. Does anyone see anything I missed? Here's what I sent him.

I don't understand what you are stating here.
"These cars were taken out of circulation and used only as pacecars for different racetracks in the United States for the first 10 years. What does that mean? No record for at least the first 10 years, then the records may appear."
There were 6360 of these cars available for purchase to the buying public. Is this one of the 2 official track cars? They had a special 350 and GM has one and the Speedway has one. I don't understand what you mean about them not being available for 10 years. I know of plenty of these around, and I own 1. This car doesn't look correct. The winged decal on the B pillar is too high, there should NOT be a Z28 logo on the passenger headrest. The center caps should have red Z28 letters on them, not silver. The dash pad is from an 84 on up car, not an 82. The stereo buttons should be black, not silver capped and there should be a red Z28 logo on the passenger rear bumper. I think this is a poorly restored car or is a clone itself!! I'd appreciate a response.

Scott,
I am by no means a pace car guru, but I seem to recall some facts.
I too, don't know what he's talking about when he says, "... taken out of circulation for ten years." In fact, I distinctly remember back in 1981-82, the very FIRST third generation Camaro I saw on a public street was a pace car.
I also know this car is NOT one of the original two track cars. Their VINs were:
1G1AP8772CL100887 (no t-tops, 11/81 production)
1G1AP8777CL114283 (t-tops, 01/82 production)
I know of plenty of these around, and I own 1.
I might get a chance to see it for the first time next week!
This car doesn't look correct. The winged decal on the B pillar is too high....
Please correct me if I'm wrong. Weren't the pace cars delivered to the dealerships with the winged decal and the "500" door decal off the car, ready for the first owner to install if wanted?
....there should NOT be a Z28 logo on the passenger headrest.
The seats just don't look correct to me. Aren't both the blue and white supposed to be vinyl?
Everything else you pointed out is excellent.
Willie

If you see the car next week, don't tell my old man that I referred to it as my car!!! It will be someday and according to ebay records, I won the sale. He just paid for it.
I think just the door decals and windshield decals came in a box for the customer. I too can be wrong. The seats are a nice blue fabric with silver vinyl.
BTW, Pace Car 100887 had ttops.

Mum's the word. I'll be at Tim Burgess' house, building a circuit board on Friday and your dad lives about ten minutes away. When your dad called me last week, I told him I would be at Tim's and he asked me to call him. I'm going to insist that he drive the pacer (not the '76 AMC!!!).
Check your PM. I sent you one on another topic.

Looks like a pretty clean car, although I like the " Muncie M22" transmission. I WISH the manual tranny cars came with a half way decent transmission..but a muncie they are NOT!!!
The only way to verify a Pace Car is the 26G interior code (only Pace Cars) and 16L paint code (possible on all cars).
I have seen reproduction seat covers for these cars, but never with the 'Z28" on the head rests..
It is amazing all the incorrect info out there about these cars..

If this is an authentic pace car it's one of the last ones built. I have one in my archives and was told that it was one of the last ones to be made. Last eight CL151448. This one on ebay has a VIN CL151916. Anybody got or seen a later one?

I think Tom is saying that he has never seen the reproduction seats with the Z28 on the headrest. For a company to put that intothe headrest, they need licensing permission from the manufacturer. It's cheaper to sell repros with this minor change.

An M22 "Rock Crusher" 4-speed isn't gonna be original... they stopped making those in about 1974 or '75.
M22 may just be the RPO for the T10 though, i dunno.

The only way to verify a Pace Car is the 26G interior code (only Pace Cars) and 16L paint code (possible on all cars). These numbers are located on the trim tag, on top, in the middle of the core support.
