Look for your build sheet. It is the only thing that will tell you RPO's. The SPID (RPO) sticker did not start until 1984.

Nothing weird about the VIN#.
It is not a prototype.

1G2AS87 = Firebird
1G2AX87 = S/E
1G2AW87 = Trans Am

H = LG4 305 V8

The 56xxx6 is nothing more than what it is. I would say offhand it was built mid July '82. Look at the cowl plate on the radiator support. It would read:

C 07(?) 2FS87 L 56xxx6
List the rest that is below the above.
It will have a few codes for you.

Like 83firebirdS/E said no SPID until '84 and look for the build sheet under the seat. If not there, it could be at a dozen other places or not in the car at all. You could probably make a list of visible options, and someone will match them up for you.

ok now that we know on 82's what digit is the package/model digit, how can we find the first part of the code on the car if the plate on the cowl under windshield is unreadable and if the door sticker has been gone for years ??

I've found build sheets on 82-84 cars under front seats and under the trunk carpet. Just some different spots to look.

no dice there, have had rear apart and odds of it still being up front somewhere are pretty slim, car has been apart in the past, totally repainted, molested car, body has already begain rustintg out again in the rear half, through in a couple places around tubs and large area in spare tire compartment, can see ground easy as cake from inside, i dont think any surviving paper is gonna be found in this car
thanks

Look on the title or registration (if you have it), last 6 digits will match last 6 digits on cowl tag on radiator support.

If you don't have a title, post all of the info on the cowl tag and I'll give you the VIN.

dont have title yet or any registration papers, i just got done removing all of interior except for actual dash and came up with no sheet, so.....

C 08E LFS87L 56xxxx
26D 21L 21U W
AR9
D S 276442

all i can get from this is that its number xxxxxxcar built at the plant it was built at, and that its originally light blue painted, and that its reclining european style bucket seats, 26D is interior i think but is unlisted, hmm.. and 08E is unlisted too, W is water base paint

thanks for anything

i just want to at least make sure its a normal 82 trans am

The 1G2AW87H1CL5xxxxx I posted for your car IS correct.

1G2AX87H1CL5xxxxx IS incorrect.

Your car is a Trans Am, Not a Special Edition.

interesting,

so if carfax uses the sequential unit portion of the
VIN code to determine first half of VIN code then that must mean that there is no other 5xxxxx sequentially built car of any kind ?

im not sure how they could figure up the first half with just a sequential unit number of a random car in existence,

thanks

I agree with 90TA the vin sould have a 2 instead of a 3

VIN:1G2AX87H2CL5xxxxx

Made in: United States
Manufacturer: General Motors
Model Year: 1982
Make: Pontiac
Carline Series: Trans Am Special Edition
Engine Code: 305 CI V8 LG4

Assembly Plant: Van Nuys
Production Sequence: 5xxxxx
Carline Code: 82-84 does not have a Carline Code.
Body Type: 2 Door Coupe
Check Digit is Valid

But actually that is a Trans Am Special Edition, this is from a program that I wrote, see sig to get it. Unfortantly without a RPO code sheet that is all I can tell you.

With our GM cataloging system at work here you only need the last 8 characters of the VIN. Once in a while you may get a couple of choices, but they are always different carlines (buick, pontiac, etc) I deal with Ford & Chrysler & they work the same way.

wont be able to get any original RPO info like that on the car if it was sold in the US... GM did not do us the favor of keeping any records like that

good luck
